Why drag religion into something I did that had nothing to do wiith being a Christian?

1 Two bicycles collided near my house.

2  A woman ran up to our door and ask me to call an ambulance for her husband which I did.

3 Went out to see if they needed anything else, which they didn't.

4 She ask if I would store their bikes so they could go in the ambulance. I said fine.

The bikes were worth aound $10k.

5 When they came to get them they thanked us many times.

6 I don't go to church, but my wife  has one. They sent a $50 donation to her church.

7 A card they also sent to the church was read in front of the congeration prasing us.

It said that was being a good Christian.

8 Doing something nice for people has nothing to do with religion. My parents never went to church and they would have done the same thing. I feel the church should haven't accepted the donation/

Update:

@ Purus Not an atheist, but I beleive atheist get a lot of put downs from religious people' Been retired from 2009. 46 years in the industry when they closed the doors. My wife was a stay at home mom most those years. When people can take church donations off their taxes they are getting something in return from those donations.A tax break. I don't call that a true donation. A true donation is given anonymous without nothing in return. I do take your answer as a compliment. Thanks.

Update 2:

@ Elise When I Iost my job (Plant shut down ) my wife who went to church where her grandmother / mother / our kids /their kids 5 generation's total, the good Christians in that church offered us 0 help, but they would glady pay the bills for people who didn't want to work, did drugs / drank or smoked. We didn't do any of that. But thanks for your honest answer.

Uhmm... you're looking at this from the wrong angle. Being a Christian doesn't mean that someone does good deeds. However, someone who does good deeds IS an indicator of a good Christian. In other words, I do understand that you may be an atheist (I'm not certain, but I'm just calling it based on a hunch). What you did is indeed an indicator of someone who is a good Christian, even if you are not a Christian yourself (or a religious individual for that matter). Either way, it was meant to be a compliment.

Now, about the donation, the church actually thrives only on donations. It's also the very reason it is not taxed because, well, how can you tax donations? So, they will accept any monetary help they can get. You, on the other hand, are a working individual with a paying job. You actually do have the option to say yes or no to someone trying to recompense you for your efforts because, well, you can afford to do so.

In any case, if you are perplexed about why they considered you a good Christian for your actions, it is because in Christianity, God blessed both who believe and don't believe in God with the ability to do good deeds. It stems out of love, doesn't it? Compassion, care, etc., all stem from love, and God is love. The verse in question is Matthew 5:44-45

    44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Basically, it means that we are all blessed, one way or another, with gifts, talents, abilities to do good, etc., and all come from God even when we do not recognize it. As Christians, we see this even in those who do not believe in God, so even when you don't believe, we'll still see it as the act of a good Christian, hence why they considered you a good Christian.

Hope that clears things up for you :)

Why be such a sourpuss about the whole thing?  Maybe the church will use the money to help someone in need.
