A 10 year old Honda is better than a brand new cheap bike, it will cost about the same as a new Chinese one. That's my advice.

Cant say for sure about motorcycles, but Kawasaki makes a really good quad. The last two or three ran great and ran forever...

reliability would have to be one of the Japanese bikes. If I want to constantly practice my mechanic skills, I would say Harley

I'm partial to my '04 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100cc, but I've had Kawasakis, Yamahas and Suzukis - and all of them were good.

A broken one so I get PAID to fix it. I dont care what the make is. As for my personal preferance? Brand doesnt matter. Type does. I build choppers. Presently My project is a Hayabusa chopper. Best of both worlds. All makes and models have individual quirks. They all need maintenance. Some more some less. They all do what they were designed to do. Problems arise when the rider decides to alter things. Want a real fast bike? Then buy one thats fast right off the showroom floor. The biggest problems I see in the shop where I work is people who wanted more power and speed than it had when they bought it. Longevity is gone when you do that. High state of tune needs more maintenance than stock. However if I have to pick a brand name its gonna be Honda. Followed by Indian Motocycle made by the Hendee Mfg company. . Followed by HD.

Quiet ones - but they are quite rare . . . . . I agree that BMW owners apparently aren't starved for attention and leave the mufflers alone.  So do many Gold Wing riders - but they tend to like blaster stereos and I'm not into their choice of music.
