This is apparently what Paul meant when telling the Corinthians: “There must also be sects among you, that the persons approved may also become manifest among you.”—1Co 11:19.

They originated as a bible study group, The Watchtower Society.  They are based on a literal interpretation of the bible, and their founder went to jail for opposing the draft in WWI because the bible says "thou shalt not kill".  They refuse transfusions because the bible says that blood is unclean. 

I do not agree with all of their beliefs, but they are well reasoned biblicly and far from satanic.
