Free Speech, What does Means for You?

Update:

#people Free Speech have to be an universal principle not a RIGHT regardless who feel offended with you words or Rant, it doesn't matter if someone call us to initiate a Nazi party, my convictions tell me that ain't Right and i won't do it, but i will let the guy says or do what he wants without consequences, at the end, the guy in the front of the third reich never killed anybody, i never killed no one either, just saying what i think without hurt no one.

What does it mean for me?  Or to me? not quite the same things.  What it means to me, is Free from government imposition or control.

Free speech means I am free to say what I think without worrying about violating legal restrictions (there really are none).  Freedom of expression of thoughts does have attached responsibilities though, meaning that just because I can it does not mean that I should.  There might be effects that are not good, and then I ought to expect consequences, not from saying, but from how others are affected by my words.  Freedom to say does not mean freedom from consequences.

So, it is only free in the sense of "My choice". It is not free in the sense of without cost.  Nothing is truly free in the sense of without potential costs.  The government simply has no role in deciding what I can say, is the only true purpose of the word "free".

What does it mean for me?  I am not sure, since I have never lived without it.

The first amendment stipulates that the GOVERNMENT shall not abridge the freedom of speech, but you may certainly be addressed by others for the words you speak. How many insults have we heard from voices concerning politicians lately, but the CIA nor any other enforcement arm of the government can intervein or punish.

In a monarchy, words against the king would result in a charge of treason and the punishment of beheading; that is what the framers of the constitution were trying to address.

You mean:  What does "free speech" mean to you?  It means the same thing it means to all US citizens.  It's the freedom to speak our minds without worrying about government interference.

It mean the right to speak, write, and print anything you want. At least in peacetime. That would include the overthrow of the government.

You would be subject to lawsuit though.

A story concerning footballer David Beckham and a woman who claimed they got it on.

Some said it was fabricated. As the woman's right to free speech meant she could claim whatever she wanted to.

It means that there's nothing that the federal, state, or local governments can do to silence people, that's why if they do silence people, they do it silently
