Why is I95 so popular in Northeast weather forecasts?

To me the whole region east of the Appalachian Mountains seems to have less brutal winters. I don't know how a narrow strip of asphalt somehow divides the climate zones in the area.

Generally speaking ... I-95 runs along the edge of the coastal plain and the Piedmont - known as the fall line or craton - which is often the dividing line between rain and snow b/c of difference in elevation above sea level.

Maybe the reason why the weathermen so often refer to I-95 is that people know where it is!  Whereas other landmarks in their regions may not be familiar to all the people getting the TV or radio version of the weather.

East of I95 is neared the ocean than the area west of I95. Presence of large bodies of water slows the change of seasons.
