How to handle tipping for the holidays?
Every year I get a Christmas bonus at work, usual a few hundred dollars. I use some of it to tip my housekeeper and yard man. This is is the first year that we did not get a bonus. My husband and I are fortunate to still have jobs, but we both took a pay cut this year so we have definitely felt the effects of the pandemic. Without my Christmas bonus we just aren't going to be able to tip our helpers. I don't know how to handle it. Should I just not say anything, or should I explain to them that it's been a tight year for us?

Assuming this is the same housekeeper and yard man you tipped before, then I think it's kindest to say something, so they don't have to wonder. If you were giving $10 or less before, then just explain. If you were giving a larger amount before, you might consider softening the blow by giving $10 this year if you can, along with a few words of thanks and e explanation. If you can't give that, then just explain.

Get a few budget gifts or make some Christmas 'goodies', for a 'cheaper' more 'personal' gift.
When I was 'cutting down', for a couple of years, I made Calendars, Small fruit loaves, Mincemeat cookies / shortbreads e.t.c. They were well received too.

🥴 This is why I always tell rich folk not to tip their staff with a large bonus. They expect it and depend on it.
Explain your troubles to them. And if you still want to do something nice, bake them some cookies.
Cheap and 2 bucks for 2 package mixes at the 99 cents store.
Its not really for them, its to ease your mind and conscience and save your reputation.
