Honestly, unless you are doing video or photo editing or some other CPU intensive activity like high end gaming, focus on things like the display, ports, and keyboard.
My 10-year-old Lenovo Thinkpad with a 2nd Gen i7 CPU and 8GB of RAM still does everything I need it to as far as emails, web surfing, watching 1080p videos, writing, spreadsheets, database, etc. and it does it nicely.

The Dell m 4500 series preferably a 4600 or 4700 or a 4800. If you want the 17-in laptop you get the 6800
They come with two gig graphics cards and can support 32 gigs of RAM a double hard drive.
And they have substantial cooling fans.
The good thing is that you can get them pretty well loaded for $350.

If you're working from home, you don't need a laptop. Get a desktop. Laptops are for people who commute.
