My mate’s great Uncle was a carpenter on many of the film sets that Wayne used and him and his mates all said that he was a “mans man” and used to often give his used butt plugs to small boys when he saw them around outside the film studios.

Absolutely!
That “mincing” walk, the sort of buttock clenching tightness that said to the viewer “ I’ve got a 20 cent coin up here all day and ain’t dropped it yet”definitely spoke volumes about the man (use the term loosely there, he could have been a closet transgender of course).
As for the used buttplugs, I seem to recall one coming up for sale on Amazon or Ebay a few years back.
Might have been Gumtree.
Fetched quite a bit because it was in its original condition and never washed.

I heard several stories over the years.  A common one blames it on a broken leg when he was younger that didn't heal well.  Saw an interview with one of his kids that said he had a back injury.  One fact that didn't help:  for a guy who was 6'4" he had tiny feet - like size 5 or 6 shoes.  And:  have you ever walked in cowboy boots - real riding boots with pointed toes and high heels?  Ain't ez.
