An airline question: is an MD11 basically a DC10?

I didn't know there were still any DC10 in use in the skies anymore, and then I saw a transport plane from Lufthansa that looked just like a DC10. After looking at their WebSite they state it's called a MD11f, but it really looks like 'the old' DC10. Is it?

The MD11 is an evolution of the DC10. It basically has the same configuration, but with a lot of changes and improvements (stretched fuselage with enlarged wing), exemplified by the fact the DC10 had 3 cockpit crew while the MD11 has only 2.

If you weren't so lazy you could look at the details of both on Wikipedia where you'll find that the answer is NO. They do not share the same type certificate due to the large number of differences.

The MD-11 is based on the DC-10 but with a number of changes, namely it is lengthened, has an increased wingspan, new engines, etc.
