It's actually more complicated than that.

Trump generally never attended the Covid task force meetings, just the press briefings.  He ignored internal briefings of all kinds throughout his presidency, preferring to govern on 'instinct'.  Well, one day, just before the press conference El Presidente decided to walk in on one of the meetings and listened to them talking about an actual real treatment that was undergoing early stage FDA testing.

The device uses UV light attached to a probe that can be snaked into the lungs (or wherever) and emit UV light to kill viruses.  We've known viruses and bacteria tend to die faster than human tissue under UV light.  It's just a question of getting the right intensity and time of exposure to maximize the damage to infections while minimizing or negating damage to healthy human tissue.  We use UV light to disinfect surfaces today.

El Moron heard this and stumbled into the press briefing and took it over like he always does.  He rambled on, trying to remember what he'd heard in the meeting, repeated it inaccurately, and talked about DISINFECTING inside a person, and did talk about INJECTING disinfectant.  He did not say "bleach".  That was a flourish the media and comedians added.  

However, what Trump did do was distract from the real science, and give bad information out at a time when clear communication was important.  Trump deserves criticism for the many many many times he did this.  Trump turned the covid briefings into an insult-o-thon with the media because that's fun for him.  It turned those briefings into useless wastes of time and people stopped tuning in. 

Meanwhile, the company trying to produce that product became a target for the media.  They produced a youtube video trying to defend their product and explain the reality of how it would work...it was a promising treatment.  The NY Times was so desperate to not let Trump have ANY WINS, it leaned on youtube and got the company's explanation videos taken down and banned.  A valid possible treatment was completely destroyed by Trump being a moron and the selfish petty media trying to destroy him.  A pox on BOTH of their houses.

The spins the media put out there on this sort of thing in time, become fact. That is how info works with the left. Lie, spin, manufacture, call it a joke or we all know it is fake and such. Then a month or so later it somehow turns into fact, that it was real and such.

You assume that the critics of Trump are actually able to understand plain English and common sense.  You are correct that Trump said that we could invent bleaches and that why kill the virus we should also be able invent medicines that would do the same.  But as they do not want to admit that Trump was right, they will continue to try to twist the statement.

There have been stupid things that Obama said - "You did not build it"  There have been stupid things that Bush has said - "Iraq has WMDs".  There have been stupid things that Clinton said - "I did not have sex with that woman".  That have been stupid things the Bush 41 said - "read me lips, no new taxes".  Every President has.

That have been some stupid things that Trump has said. This was not one of them.  It was correct that we should be able to come up with something that effective against the COVID-19.  And according to Biden we did - the vaccines.  That is why he is pushing them so hard.
