Why is it that Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders had far more people at their campaign rallies than Joe Biden ever did?

Joe didn't need people at the rallies.. his votes had already been made up and were waiting in trucks to come to the polls when needed.  Talk abut a fix!!!

Because of a PANDEMIC!!!

Maybe it's because Joe Biden supporters actually understand the importance of 'social distancing' because of the Coronavirus.

Rallies are attended by a very tiny percent of voters.  The number of people who attend rallies is even smaller than the number of people who give money to campaigns.

While rallies are useful in recruiting volunteers, the people who attend rallies are not representative of your typical voter.

As someone actually involved in Democratic politics, most Democrats did not want Sanders.  Even in 2016, when Sanders got the "anyone but Hillary" vote, he only got 43% of the primary vote.  Through Super Tuesday (excluding his home state of Vermont), Sanders was maxing out at around 37%.  

Populism appeals to a certain segment of the population on the left and the right, but they aren't the majority of voters.  Trump got the Republican nomination in 2016 because the Republican rules for the nomination are based on "first-past-the-post" which favors a candidate with a solid group of loyal supporters in a large field. Because the Democratic rules for the nomination are based on "proportional representation," winning the Democratic nomination requires becoming the consensus pick which requires appealing to folks outside your base.  

Because Biden followed the medical advice during a pandemic and decided that he would not put Americans lives at risk in order to boost his ego by having thousands cheering him while spreading the virus..  

Rallies don't win elections, but they are won by doing the work and coming up with plans and then telling the electorate what you plan to do to end an out of control pandemic, help the millions who have suffered from this through no fault of their own and how to stop the US economy going down the toilet.

What were Trump's plans?  Can you find a single video from these rallies where Trump put forward any real solid plan on how he would deal with the multiple problems the country is facing because I can't.   

Oh just remembered he did promise he was going to get the Supreme Court to abolish Obamacare, so 30 million Americans would lose their health insurance during a pandemic, along with many of the tens of millions who  lost their jobs in the previous jobs in the previous months who had also lost their health cover.

Just attacks, lies and spreading ever more fear, so a big crowd would cheer his every sentence and he could swell his self esteem. 

Biden mostly stayed his basement.  His entire strategy was to lay low and let the media attack Trump for him.

Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are two sides of the same coin. They both espouse extreme right-wing and anti-immigrant positions. Both use demagogic rhetoric to whip up their respective bases. Sanders' anti-Latino and anti-Muslim rhetoric is nothing new. In his campaign, Sanders has attacked the "Mexican" vote as a voting bloc that could put an anti-immigrant Democratic Party candidate over the top. But this rhetoric is not new. For decades, Trump has used the xenophobic and racist rhetoric that he has made the centerpiece of his campaign. Like Sanders, Trump has stoked the flames of hate through racist statements against minority groups. This rhetoric is nothing new to this country. It was commonplace during the 1920s and 1930s, and was popularized by people like Hitler, Mussolini, and Adolph Hitler, with their racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric. Trump is a classic demagogue. He does not distinguish himself from his counterparts in the GOP or the GOP primaries by appealing to the minority vote. His only appeal is to the hardline, anti-immigrant GOP voters.

How many votes did the libertarian party get this year? Do you even know? That might help answer your question. Americans, including some Republicans, are tired of Trump.
