They recommend between 1-1/2 to 2 cups of fruit, and between 2 to 2-1/2 cups of vegetables a day, depending on age and gender. That works out to about the same amount in grams, but is easier for people to measure

It's no secret that vegetables are a vital part of a healthy diet. Eating vegetables every day is important for living/maintaining a healthy life. They provide essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, such as antioxidants and fiber. Research has consistently shown that people who eat at least 5 servings of vegetables a day have the lowest risk of many diseases, including cancer and heart disease.

But then what counts as a serving? A serving is simply the amount that will fill a one-cup measuring cup. But one serving of raw leafy greens (like spinach and lettuce) is two cups, and eight ounces of vegetable or tomato juice also counts as a one-cup serving.

Another way to think about vegetable servings is in terms of tablespoons, which can come in handy when calculating servings for babies, toddlers, and very young children who wouldn't be able to down an entire cup of veggies in one sitting. There are about 16 tablespoons in a cup.

    DAVE!

What's important is getting the nutrients your body needs.  If you eat 3+ cups of a wide variety of vegetables, you will likely get a good amount of vitamins, minerals, and fiber for very few calories.  As they say, "eat the rainbow" in terms of colors (dark leafy greens, red, purple, orange, yellow, etc.)

The federal guidelines (in the US) recommend adults consume 2 -3 cups of vegetables per day and 1-1/2 - 2 cups of fruit (see source link). It's also recommended that those veggies and fruits come from a variety of sources (not just the same 1 or 2 items). Basically, a rainbow of colors, as they all have different nutrients the body needs.

5 serves a day is recommended.

Most vegetables a serve is 1/2 cup.

Ideally, the 5 serves should be a minimum of 5 different vegetables of different colours and from different parts of the plant

It's better to eat more vegetables than it is to eat meat
