Will I get in trouble if I turn on my own gas after termite tenting?

We're having our house tented in a couple weeks. The gas and electric company (SDG&E) will not be able to come to our house until day following the tent removal to turn on the gas and light the pilots. I asked if I can just do this myself, but they said it's the law that they need to do it.

Question is - I plan to do this myself. Can I get in trouble?

Update:

PS yes I know it's about safety.  But I know how to do it just as safely as them.. Question is about legality.

I never would have contacted them …just done it myself …But since they have been notified you may want to play it safe. …….being in CA you may get 50 years hard labor for touching your gas line.

There is a REASON they do it. It's about safety.
