Ah, you must still be in your twenties. The greatest opponent to the USSR was Reagan. The reason that today's republican base is not as opposed to Russia as the democrats is because republicans are temperamentally more hierarchical, so they more readily accept their leaders' views (oppose to the left, who "eat their own" members). Trump was more accepting of Russia. That is what turned the right more accepting of Russia as well.
