It really took off after the "The X-Files" TV show went on the air in the 90's.

They were doing it before it was "cool." People's interest in the supernatural comes and goes, and the most recent peak was in the mid-00's for sure, but its popularity has since waned since so many shows were proven to be fake. It's not popular, per se, but will always have a cult following.
