What's the point of a VPN?

What the hell is the point of a VPN proxy blocker when most sites I use actively ask me to turn it off if I want to access the site? I'm on fixed income so I can't afford to waste money on something that doesn't even work as it should.

Update:

Sites I use often that request my VPN be turned off

Netflix

Hulu

Funimation

Archiveofourown

Fanfiction

if a website can detect that you are using a vpn then your vpn is not good and is likley causing DNS leaks which reveal your real location.

"free" vpn or proxies are junk and normally steal data.

get a cheap paid one (nord vpn)

i can very quickly change my location to any of a several dozen countries and no website knows.

That's odd.  I use a VPN with Netflix all the time.

I tell my VPN to route my traffic to the UK so I can access Netflix in the UK.  It has programming on it like The Big Bang Theory and Star Trek Discovery that just isn't available here in the USA.

If it helps, the VPN I use is Surfshark.  It's actually pretty inexpensive for a VPN and works without any fussing around with the settings, other than picking the country I wish to route my traffic to.  And I don't really have to do that if I don't want to.
