The best at what? The best navigator, the best leader, the best dresser? What?

Everything Columbus did was based on him being an idiot...but also crazy lucky.  Contrary to modern myth (mostly resulting from Italian groups promoting Columbus Day), the fact that the Earth was round was NOT unknown to people in Columbus' era.  They even had a pretty good estimate on how large it was thanks to estimates and measurements made in ancient Greece.

However, in Columbus' era, no one in Europe knew there was a big landmass between Asia and Europe to the west.  So no one sailed that way because it would be too long to survive.  Columbus however, decided to come up with his own estimate for Earth's size which was NOT EVEN CLOSE.  He massively underestimated the size, and so though he could sail west and reach India before running out of food and fresh water.  He got LUCKY that there happened to be a continent in the way, or else he and his entire crew would have died.

Leif did it from the Arctic with an open boat. "Go, Leifs! Go!" "Number ONE!"

It is Leif Ericsson for me, he discovered North America first 👍😀 !. Chris never set foot in the United States of America or Canada, he’s a usurper of other people’s glory !.
