Learned today that some luxury vehicles like Volvo, BMW, etc, have terrible resale value, might as well buy a cheaper Toyota, right?

BMW isn't that bad. It's Volvo that really has bad resale value. If there is a luxury vehicle that really appeals to you and you want to spend the money for the driving dynamics and features, you buy it if you have the extra money to run it.

Most buyers of luxury cars do NOT worry about resale value or say fuel economy.  They lease and tack it on as a business expense.  And they get a new car every three years or so.  Think like the rich.
