It's a very difficult thing to make a career out of.

I went to fashion college and got a degree. I can make anything and everything. There are times I've been swimming in money and times I've been swimming in nothing. The best paying job I had was pattern and marker making for another company. Pattern makers are always in demand. The one thing that I've always had more customers is custom design and made to.measure clothing. I've done everything from men's dress pants for a guy with fit problems to a whole career wardrobe for a little person to dance costumes to innumerable prom and bridesmaid dresses. I had a small line for several years but the rise of fast cheap fashion and the recession of '08 killed that.

You probably won't live like Karl Lagerfeld or reign over a fashion empire like Michael Kors. It's nowhere near as glamorous as shown in movies or TV with the exception of project runway and even that show isn't 100% realistic. A designer seldom makes a dress from car parts or cat toys although I did participate in the toilet paper design fundraiser campaign. Many designers never get the point of launching a line. However if you love working with fabrics and beautiful clothing it's a great job.

Oh yeah, over the years I've saved a small fortune in clothing repair and alterations because I can do this myself.
