I bet there's more to the story.
Does he refuse to manage his illness? Does he drink too much, eat in ways that are going to lead to blindness or losing a foot, not test his blood sugar like he's supposed to?
It can be supremely frustrating to live with a person who's slowly killing himself and refuses to stop. It sets a bad example for the kids about personal responsibility as well.
