British people are you ashamed that Germany nearly brought your country to its knees?

Not at all.  I don't identify strongly with my country in national terms.  I'm more ashamed, if anything, that fascism was as successful as it was here in the 1930s.

I think for British people, the key word in that question would be "nearly."

You're essentially asking if British people are ashamed that Germany wasn't able to bring their country to its knees, and I think the answer to that one's fairly obvious.

I've met a lot of British people.  Haven't met one yet who was ashamed of how their country stood up in the face of German aggression in either of the World Wars.

Their answer might be a bit different if you ask them what they think of Neville Chamberlain, but making it through the war?  Nah.  Never met one of them who wasn't glad of the fact they were able to do that.

Why would I be ashamed of something that almost happened, 50 years before I was born?
