Does an amtrak train stop in or near yosemite national park?
There are "stations" listed on amtrak's website but they have a tendency to list bus station connectors as "stations" -- I want to know if an actual train stops in or near the national park... the map here makes it look like they certainly go close to it! http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer/Page/1...

3 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoWhere to watch the meteor shower near SLC, UT?
So tomorrow night is our opportunity to see the Leonids - several dozen meteors per hour, they say...
Is there someone from Salt Lake or from Utah who can make a recommendation to me? I was thinking that Guardsman Pass would be ideal, but it's been snowing lately and the road officially closed a few weeks ago... I know there have to be a ton of places where I can escape light pollution and get a good view of as much of the sky as possible -- but where do you recommend?
Should I drive west on 80 and find a place to pull off in the salt flats? Should I drive south on 15 and find a place there? Or should I head out past Park City on or near 40 and find a place up at a higher elevation?

2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoBeen bait 'n switched with verbal/written gym contracts - what to do?
So we joined Gold's Gym a week and a half ago.
the sales person gave us verbal terms to a contract, saying "you don't have to read it, i'll just explain it" -- and telling us that we were signing a month-to-month that we could cancel at any time. The term of the contract, he said, was two years, but we could end the contract without penalty so long as we called the corporate office and gave 30 days notice.
Well, we called to cancel one of our memberships, and they told us that the written contract stipulates that there is no cancelling the contract, we have to pay for the two year period stipulated therein -- and that any verbal agreements are null because we signed the contract.
and, indeed, there is an integrated clause in the contract stating that there is no verbal agreement that can supercede the terms of the written contract.
of course, we were dumb and didn't read it, we just signed when he explained it to us.
now they won't allow a cancel.

1 AnswerOther - United States1 decade agoWhat to do for a thrown back?
Basically, I have had some stress on my back in the last 72 hours, moving things i had to move, etc...
and yesterday, in the middle of a seemingly harmless motion of lifting a book while bending over, all of the muscles in my lower back just *seized* and I could do little from falling over.
as long as I lie flat on my back on the floor it's bearable. when I'm sitting up it's very painful and if I bend at all it's excruciating.
I took ibuprofin and this morning I put an 8 hour heat pack on the back.
the way i would describe the pain is --- imagine a contortion-spring scorpion or crossbow --- where the string winding up on both sides of the bolt provides maximum pressure... that's the picture i have in my head of all of the muscles on the two sides of my spine.
lower back...
so, today is supposed to be moving day -- all my stuff's in the car and i'm supposed to get on the road to drive 2,000 miles across the country...what can I do to help heal this situation and loosen those muscles

2 AnswersOther - US Local Businesses1 decade agoWhy is serious philosophy dominated by academics?
Honestly, that a philosopher/scholar would TEACH for a living was totally new when Kant did it, now we all assume that a person can't really be a serious philosopher if they're not in academia.
What gives with the institutionalized constraints?
are they beneficial to the field or detrimental? or if it's a mixture, how so and to what degree for each?

3 AnswersOther - United States1 decade agoWinXP32bit vs WinXP64bit: What's the difference in performance?
I've got a newly built PC - 4gb ram, souped up graphics, etc...
but winXP32 won't even load on the machine - first, is that at all common?
second, winXP64bit will load, but will it run my favorite games (WoW, counterstrike, call of duty, etc)?
Before last week, i didn't even know about the two versions of the OS --- my other option is vista, but i don't really want a whole lot of nonsense loading up my machine, especially when I *trust* winXP. So I'm currently stuck on linux, which is great as long as I don't want to run games...
any advice?
I also do dvd/music storage/burning and word-processing, but that's pretty much it...
will WinXP64bit allow me these things?
what's the real difference between 32 and 64?
help!
3 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoAt which Utah ski resort should I buy a season pass? Need some opinions...?
Spending my first winter in SLC, Utah, this winter - and I'm looking at all the resorts and trying to choose which one is the best resort for me.
Do you have an opinion or idea about what place you like best? If so, please say why.
In my case, I'm an expert rider - what I need to be totally satisfied is big bowls, some chutes, and lots of powder (no problem with 500 inches per year). Fewer people is helpful (for instance, of the 12+ out-west resorts I've been to, Moonlight Basin (scary chute hike!) and Copper Mtn (best bowls) have
been among my top 3, above Breck, Beaver Creek and Vail...)
I'm a student, so I should get a discount, and Alta is out immediately, since it's a no-snowboard resort.
Whaddya think?
4 AnswersOther - Winter Sports1 decade agoWhat are the benefits and drawbacks of moving to Tampa, FL?
I have an option between moving to buffalo and moving to tampa -- if you're from tampa or have lived there, tell me about it, please.
the more generic, the less helpful ("it's a unique city!" doesn't help)
the more specific, the more helpful ("part of town X is a really down to earth place, lots of coffee shops, etc")
I'm not interested in hearing about clubs and bars, i know about them - i'm interested in pretty much any other info you can offer.
2 AnswersOther - United States1 decade agosmall frame bike vs large frame bike for my 330 mile trip, help me out?
I have a small frame bike - a raleigh venture
- the top tube comes up to about 3 or more inches below my crotch area
- the seat, when i stand over it, is in just the right place
the guy who was trying to sell me bikes told me that this would just not do, that a person my height (5'10.5", 29 inch inseam) would be crazy to ride the small frame over a long distance... but me riding it around now, i don't see the big deal... someone tell me why it would be such a problem if the seat is in the right place.
i mean, he took one look at it and said "take it back, get rid of it, get a large frame bike, this won't work"
do i need to go out and pick up a new 400 dollar passage or can i ride this venture i have now?
4 AnswersCycling1 decade agoadvice for long bike tours...?
I'm planning a 340 mile pittsburgh-to-D.C. bike trip along the allegheny/c&o canal bike trails, and i'm planning on camping most or all of the nights --- i'm getting a super lightweight tent to carry with me...
what advice do the experienced riders have for a newbie? the longest trip i ever made was 72 miles in a weekend when i was 13 from cumberland to DC... and it was a great time, so i want to do it again, only this time -- a longer trip, now that i'm 23.
advice for safety, morale, how to carry supplies (light backpack a bad idea in addition to bike pack? what sorts of bike packs are best for weight distribution and carrying things?), advice regarding safe diets, safe travel, and anything else you can think of as "basic" and important for me to know.
i want to leave in 2 weeks and i'm planning now. there's only so much time before i have to get a new job.
3 AnswersCycling1 decade agoBest bike for riding the allegheny/C&O Canal trails?
I'm planning a trip down the allegheny trail, starting in pittsburgh, and meeting up with the C&O canal trail, and i know a bit about the surfaces of the trails from my research, but the thing is, i just don't know much about bicycles...
what brands are good brands for crossover/hybrid style bikes? i know that a street bike wouldn't be appropriate for this trip -- nor would a trail/mountain bike.
trip length is about 340 miles
packed limestone for most of the trail. some light off-roading, some on-roading...
i'm also very cost-conscious ---- looking on craigslist for bikes, but i know nothing about brands and really anything else... any advice would be appreciated
2 AnswersCycling1 decade agomy freind calls me and says he wants me to take him to file a police report... tell me if this sounds right?
so a few weeks ago she got mad at him, said she was taking their daughter and leaving (which he should have just let her do) and he spent a week in jail before she dropped assault charges for something that may or may not have been accurately charged
(he requested that a neighbor call the police and when they got there they arrested him for the disturbance)
----
her father owns the place htey lived in -- so when she filed a PFA (which she dropped a week later) this kid was evicted
--------
her father took all of his belongings (i am talking at least 6-8k worth of stuff) and he's "holding them" at his house until this kid gives him some money he's decided the kid owes him
----
today, the girl calls my friend and wants him to watch the baby for the day - he says "i don't think i can do that" - and she says "well you're not going to win this game, and tonight when the garbage guys come, all of your belongings will be outside"
so he called me and wants me to take him to the police station
