  • Does Queer still mean strange in other English speaking countries?

I know the meaning of the word queer changed quite a bit as far as its history is concered. And it s not defined as "strange, odd" although the dictionary still list both old and new defination.

Does that mean that it s still used in the context of "strange or odd" in other English speaking country like britian, austrailia, india, or others? Does it retain both defination?

  • Why is Maine taking so long to count their vote?

I was looking at the voting results that was rolling in.

Why is Maine, which is located in the east coast and one of the earliest state to start voting and ended voting. Taking so long to count their ballot when even Hawaii and California finished counting their vote??

Shouldn't east coast state finish the count faster since they finished voting earlier? Or is Maine just really short on staff?

  • Question for Butch Lesbians?

Is it offensive when someone mistakes you for transman and refer to you as a "he" or "mr"?

  • How to tell difference between tomboy and a transgender?

Obviously the easiest way is to ask, but asking is offensive. I work in retails and sometimes I have to help customers make their choices and make small talks.

Sometimes I get customers that have feminine features but are either lazily dressed, tomboy, or transgender.

I m too scared to call them by the wrong pronoun, or accidentally offending them by recommending purple shirts.

I was helping someone today, and he/she came with wife/friend and the wife/friend picked a shirt, and it was clearly too small. I was trying to say that, but my speech stopped at "I think this shirt looks too small for -----" because I was afraid to use a wrong pronoun. How can I tell the difference between a tomboy with a friend and a transman with his wife? Because he/she did not have any masculine features, he/she just dressed like a man, and I can t tell!!

Do you give secret hints to the store clerks or something? I m not good at playing the pronoun game. What was I supposed to say? Is it offensive to be called by the wrong pronoun or be recommended with a purple shirt?

  • If a country goes bankrupt, can they sell themselves?

You know how USA purchased Louisiana from France and Alaska from Russia?

So let's say a country is deeply in debt and defaulted on its loan they made from china.

Can the said country sell their own territory and land to china to pay back? As in, the said country will become part of china?

  • EU, Schengen, and refugee crisis?

It s my understanding that every nationals of each EU nation are free to travel and work at any other EU nation.

It s also my understanding that Schengen area is effective border-free, visa-free space where anybody can walk into each other s country without ever being stopped by a border patrol.

So doesn t that mean that if Germany decides to let in the refugees, and these refugees decides to find a job and move to Spain, there s nothing stopping them?

The media coverage speaks as though each country have it s own independent immigration policy, but as long as that country is part of the EU/Schengen, the refugees are free to move from one place to another. So why does it even matter if Spain is against refugee and Germany is pro refugee? It s not like Spain can stop Germany and it s not like Spain can close it s border from European travellers (and refugees)

  • Are some languages easier for deaf to learn?

We know reading is hard for dead people, usually because our written language is closely related to speaking language, and it s hard to learn to read without speaking.

But not all languages around the world are phonic. Triditional Chinese have almost no phonic connection to spoken language, which is the reason why people in Taiwan, Hong Kong, ancient Korea and Vietnam were able to communicate by writing Triditional Chinese even though none of them can speak eachother s language.

Does that mean that deaf children in Taiwan does not have difficulty learning to read and write like the rest of the world? Since their writing is disconnected from spoken words?

  • Should I mention that I dropped out/failed some courses when I apply for College?

I'm applying for optometry school. I finished my bachelors and I'm sending that transcript in, but midway through, I went to a nursing school for a semester, realized it's not for me, and dropped out of class. I went back to undergraduate study shortly after.

Should I add nursing school as part of my application? Am I required to list all the school I attended regardless of weather I got any degree from it?
