  • What do you think about the luxury condo that turned into a homeless shelter?

    What are your thoughts about the luxury condo that turned into a homeless shelter?

    I read an article today about the Brooklyn, NY Luxury condo building that was given over to be used as a homeless shelter. The story goes that the economy is really bad and the owner couldn't get people to rent out apartments in his building. So as an alternative, he teamed up with the city and nonprofit organization to turn the building into a shelter. It was a win win situation for him and definitely for the tenants. The people in the neighborhood, however, are fuming. Here are some quotes from neighbors:

    1. "At least they could have rented it out ot working people in the community. That would have been better than a shelter."

    2. "To walk over there and see that folks in a shelter are living better than we are, it's not fair."

    How do you feel about this? A neighborhood activist is trying to get the shelter closed down. Is he justified to lead that charge?

    For me, I am bias because I used to be homeless with my daughter. We went through the shelter system and roughed things out until we got back on our feet. I always had it in my mind to move up and not stay down. Now, I am off public assistance and section 8. Someone gave me a chance and I have been working in a law firm for 3 years now. I pay rent on my own now. Although times were hard and some people treat you like crap, I'm grateful for all the help that I got in the shelter system. I really appreciate that this condo turned into a shelter because not only are places overcrowded, but also it gives people a shot at being treated like the human beings they are. It's an act of kindness that also pushes you to work at getting a job and renting out something of your own that is similar or even better one day.

  • Can you tell me what "Goodness" is?

    Hi everyone. I'm studying out the Fruits of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23. This month i'm up to Goodness, but i'm stumped as to how to grasp that. When have you seen that quality in Jesus in the bible (do you know the passage?)? Or, have you seen that in anyone else's character? Can you tell me how to imitate that? What is your interpretation of "Goodness" anyway? Thanks.

  • Biblically?

    I'm doing some research for something and was wondering what you thought. What kind of characteristics do you need to survive in war? Think about this in our world today, in the past, or from what you've seen in bible characters that you've read about. Thanks.

    Examples: tact, strength, etc.

  • I have a stain on my shirt...?

    I don't know what got into me, but I have a crisp white collar shirt on today. I decided however, to eat pasta for lunch. A small splash of the spaghetti sauce got on my shirt. I assume that some oil is mixed in with it. Is there any remedy to get this spot off?

  • Question about Jesus, Mary & John at the cross...?

    John 19:25-27: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister... When Jesus saw his mother there and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, "Woman, here is your son," and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home...

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    John taking in Jesus' mother is such a great example of going all out for love & such a great service to a woman who lost so much. (Her husband Joseph was gone and now her son Jesus was gone too).
    ~~~~~~~~~~

    The question I have though is this: If Mary had other sons, how is it that they are not mentioned as being by the cross? How is it that she's not taken in by one of them? Could it be that John took in the whole family? Or, was it that Jesus' brothers were not Jesus' disciples yet so they weren't asked to care for Mary?

  • Following God...?

    If you know for sure that God has told you to do something, how long does it take you to follow thru with his command? What distracts you and keeps you from doing what he says? For me, it's timidity...

  • Harry Potter disturbances...?

    Hey, has anyone witnessed any strange Harry Potter distubances ever since the newest book came out? No lie, this morning at my job, this girl was walking around talking to herself loudly. I work in a law firm so it was not a familiar thing to walk around all loud. Anyways, she kept saying "Have you seen Potter?" Poor thing probably hasn't been taking her meds.

  • Jewish Question...?

    I was reading a caption from the Daily News in the article about the fire to a synagogue in Rockland County, New York, and it said,

    "...Jews should remain in exile until the Messiah returns to lead them to the promised land."

    It is a shame and an outrage that the fire took place if indeed it was on purpose, but I was wondering about Jewish history here. I thought that during King Artaxerxes' reign and again during King Xerxes' reign that the Isrealites, Jews, were freed from exile. The Jews also seemed to be under Roman rule during Jesus times, but I wasn't under the impression that they were still exiled then. Can anyone update me on this?

  • Eating properly...?

    I know that Daniel rejected the food that the King wanted to serve him and opted for veggies to avoid eating unclean things. Welp, Jesus declared all things clean, but tell that to the pimples on my face. Can someone give some good advice for me to change my ways and still enjoy food? I'm going to start a veggies & fruits diet. That sounds easy, but it's NOT! How can I change my diet to veggies & fruits, but not suffer "it tastes nasty" syndrome? Any way to spice up the new eating habit???
