I grew up with my father teaching me to drill wells, and been in construction ever sense except for 3 years in the military.

  • I need help with this question about making power from turbines vs. waterwheels.?

I have studied a lot about producing electricity and I have found one book about it that the aurthur has a turbine set up in one of the northeast states. Vermont I think, but anyway, he has a nice looking set up that hasd 625' of head and uses 1 cubic foot per second of water and produces 10. 5 KW's of juice.

Now I fully understand that a 625' water wheel would be a hell of a job to build but that so far, is the only known site with the amount of water and the amount of head that I have found. I am talking about one that is, atleast suppose to be a fact.

But my way of looking at it is a cubic foot of water (62.4 lbs) on a lever that is 312.5 feet long (halve the width of the wheel) is 19,500 lbs of foot torque.

If you had that much per second and turned the wheel at one RPM you would continusly have that much tourque on the shaft from only the water that is directly at a horizonal angle from the wheel.

But you also have the water that is above and below the center so if you figure the weight that is making power how do you figure it.

What I am thinking is the water at the top is making no power but as it get closer to the center line it become closer to the full amount of torgue.

That means that if you start from dead top center (DTC) and go to DBC, the weight shpould make 100% of it's power on 25% of it time on the wheel.

In other words, if you have 1 cubic foot of water per second, you have 60 CFM > 25% = 15 CFM giving full power continuosly.

    That is 15 x 62.4 x 312.5 = 292,500 foot pounds of torque.

If I am not wrong, one horse power= 5252 fpt x rpm.

    Am I correct in thinking that 292,500 > 5252 = 55.69 HP????

    Am I also correct that 55.69 HP x .743 = 41 KWH's of juice???

In other words the known power from the water and fall that is 10. 5 KW's of juice could be making four times the amount on a water wheel.

Nearly every book I have read on the subject says that a turbine was more effeicient than a water wheel, yet it takes less water with a water wheel to produce the same amount of power.

What kind of lolly gagging is that??

  • Starting fruit trees from cuttings?

I have found some sites on line that showed how to take a tree limb still on a fruit tree and slice 1/2 of the back off of it for something like 3 or 4 inches, and then wraping it in gauze, (just like you use for a cut on a human body), and then wetting the gauze with a root tone type of mixture and then covering it with plastic and taping it at both ends.

According to what I read, you could take any size cutting from the tree and do it meaning if you were going to prune a tree that had a limb that was 6 to 8 feet long, you ended up with a tree that was rooted good and ready to put into a five gallon planting pot of potting soil and would have a pretty good sized tree the first year.

I have a friend that is starting an orchard and doing very well with it I might add.

He already has 5 apples, 4 peaches, 3 pears, 3 plums 3 cherry, and some others that I forget right now, but he has a total of 31 different type of fruit trees that are already setting fruit. I mean each apple tree is different types from each other, etc. but Steve wants to prune a few whole limbs from every one of the trees he has and some of them is more than an inch wide and 6 to 8 feet long.

I have 20 acres of field here behind the house and he only has 6 acres and most of that is either wooded or already a garden.

If any of you great people out there can point me to a site that shows how to wrap them up and root them, I'd be happy to send you a rooting of each one of the trees for shipping cost only. 31 trees will start your own mini orchard, LOL.

I have just got to find the site that shows how to do it so Steve can read it himself. If I get it going right I can get more than 100 trees already about 6 feet tall from get go here just from his pruning.

But he is scared if he does it that it will "bleed the tree to death" as he says it.

I looked at it good and I fully understand how it wooks but he has to see it before he does it. And I hat to see him through away a hundred or more future trees.

Any help finding a site that shows how would sure be appriciated.

Thanks ahead for any help, and as I said, I'll send whoever hooks me up with some baby trees if they want and the trees he bought cost from $34.99 up to $69 each.

  • I want to build a generator sorta like the ones they build for windmills?

I have learned the larger u make the disc and the more magnets u use the slower it has to turn to make electricity.

The magnets they sell for this are high priced as all get out and I am wondering two things.

Can I use welders magnets that are designed to hold steel in place until it is tack welded, and 2nd., can I cut the magnets.

I am a welder and have used these magnets for years. I have some that are more than 20 years old and they still work great and I can buy some at www.harborfrieght.com for $ .97 each compared to 30 bucks for the same pull that thay sell for building generators for wind mills.

HELP if you can. No one in the business will answer my e-mails.

  • I need help with the deer in the garden?

What will keep deer out of fa garden?? Any plants you know of that you can plant that will cause them to stay away.

I haven't even planted it yet and there were 3 different sets of tracks out there when I went out there to do some tilling this morning.

I live just inside the city limits so killing them with a rifle would be risky as far as the cops goes.

On the other hand, it would only take one shot per kill and if I just left it there until I knew the cops weren't coming, I could retreave it and clean, cook and eat deer for a while.

But from what I have always heard, you can't eat deer you kill in the summer.

Does anyone know why, or is this an old wifes tail???

  • Buying land together cheaper and splitting up?

I was wandering if there are anyone out threre that is looking for land and would conceder buying a larger tract and splitting it up.

I have seen some tracts that are 500 to 1,000 acres for less than a thosand an acre and the smaller tracts like 5 or 10 acres around it were going for

    3 to $ 4.000 an acre.

I don't care where it is as long as it has plenty of trees and a creek.

You may be able to get a 25 acre tract for $25,000 to $30,000 where the next door neighbor paid over a hundred thousand for his or hers.

I have no doubt that 20 people working togwther could buy 25 acres each and build themselves a $200,000 log home for less than $50,000.

I tried to get this started on another site but there were too many coming up with stupid reasons why it couldn't work and they finally teed me off and I went off on them and that was the end of that. Everyone bailed out and we had several that was interested.

Please, if you have something bad to say, keep it to yourselve. Please.

  • hanging tomato plants?

I have seen ads for little buckets where you plant a veggie plant, such as tomatoes in them and they hang upside down.

They look good in the pictures but we all know they make pictures look good.

Has anyone here ever used them and if so, how did they do???

I am going to grow a large garden this year and was thinking of ordering one of them to see how they are made and making more of them and hanging them on a cable across the yard, but don't know whether to gamble the small amount of funds I have going that route.

If you have ever used one or know someone that has, please let me know.

  • Does anyone have a set of disc to pull behind a lawn and garden tractor to till a garden or a real tractor?

I want to build a set of disc from saw blades. I read John Deere, the big tractor man, got his start by using old worn out saw blades and building disc to cut dirt that was sticking to other types of plows.

I have a 12 H.P. riding mower and intend on taking the mower deck off and useing it to plow about an acre of land, give or take 9/10's of an acre, lol.

I need to learn what the angles the blades are set at, how much of a bowl shape they have, meaning the depth of the disc laying flat, and anything else you can tell me about them.

I also need to know where to get the lugged AG type tires on the wheels for the mower, Cheap.

I am thinking of cutting two sets of wheels and welding the center of the mower wheels to a set of 13" or 14" mud and snow tires.

I think I have a set, but not sure what size they are.

Would they be good enough to get traction in the dirt on a little 12 hp mower?

I need some help on this because I don't have much money.

  • Where to get old worn out 12", 14", or 16" saw blades.?

I ask this question the other day and got flagged for it so I will change the wording. ??????

I want to make a set of disc to pull behind a lawn/garden tractor, from old sawblades from a table saw, for a small garden tractor and I need 6 or 8 of one size old blades to do so with. If I could put together 6 to 8 of one size on each axle I could move up on the size of the next axle if I needed to.

I guess I could even use a row of 10" blades in the front.

Does anyone know of a shop or anywhere that may have them they would give away or sell cheap.

I'm scared to say anything else or they may jerk this one off too.

  • Why does everyone set it so no one can e-mail them?

I try to get as many best answers as I can and I don't answer some questions because the question doesn't give enough info to give a correct answer.

Some of them is like a shot in the dark and I will not answer them.

I have e-mailed a couple of people and got nice responses from them after I found out what the problem truely was and was able to help them. I have evn given my phone number to 3 or 4 people so I could explain things better, that needed help and I even got a christmas card from one of them.

I am disabiled from a fall I took, but I worked in construction for over 30 years and know what I am talking about. If I don't, I keep my mouth shut, but there are some people that answer questions and make the answer sound like it is correct when it is fool hardy to attempt what they say.

I was just wondering why you ask a question but close your e-mail out. It is simple enough to spam someone that is bothering you.

  • 3 point hitch, plows, disc, and tires for small lawn and garden tractors?

I have 20 acres of land behind my house I can use for gardening and small livestock, such as chickens and rabbits. I am a welder by trade and I want to build a 3 point hitch for a 12 HP lawn mower to plow a large garden. I can do the fabracation but I would like to buy the plows and the disc and build the racks for them.

Does any one know where I could buy them and what size I should get?

The mower has 18" x 9.5" on 8" rims. I have enough room to put tires on it up to 24" X whatever, and I can cut the hub off the ones I have now and fab up hubs to fit the axles. Any ideas on where to get the tractor lugged type tires at a good price.

I am disabled and the check is very big so I need the cheapest things I can find that will work.

Hope some one out there can lead me in the rigth direction.

    Thanks for the help.

  • My computor is getting as slow as an ace of spades when you really need it.?

I defraged it today and got nothing in return. I'm not sure if it would help to delete some things or not and don't even know what I shouldn't delete if I tried. I did that to the last one and had to rush it to the 125 buck hospital for major surgery, lol.

I am scared to do too much but I am tired of it's slow *** also.

Does anyone have any ideas. If you need more details I will add them on. Just ask and I will do so, great doctors that I know are out there somewhere.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • 1 BTU is the amount of heat needed to change the temp of water 1 deg. How can you figure it out with air??????

I built a tube grate for my fireplace with 6 - 2" tubes and a 250 CFM blower and when I build up a roering fire you can't hold the back of your hand in front of one of the tubes long enough to say one thousand one before jerking it back. It is heating a 1200 Sq. Ft. house in 15 degree weather as long as I keep the fire going and I can get it hot enough in here to make us open the doors sometimes, but I was wondering how many BTU's it is putting out?
