  • I'm very expressive when I speak...?

When I talk, even on the phone, I tend to use my hands a lot when I speak, and I'm very expressive with my face. I know it can be distracting for someone whom I'm speaking with, and may make me come across in the wrong way, i.e., like I've been drinking or something else along those lines.

Maybe it's the Cajun in me that does that, who knows. I don't get it from any family member.

My question for you is what do you think when you meet a woman who is overly expressive when they speak? How would I come across to you? Please be honest; this is something I'm trying to curtail about myself.

  • I'm buying a house in Houston and was wondering what's the best electricity company to sign with. Any ideas?

I've read the Terms of Service, price per Kw/h, etc., and some give more at the beginning, while others are cheaper in the long term. Who do you think is the best electricity provider in Houston? How long did it take for you to get your power back on after Hurricane Ike?

  • Who do you think of as positive male role models on television?

This question is spawned from a question asked by Celtish, wherein he asks about why men are so negatively portrayed in the media. I agree with him that MOST comedy sitcoms show them in a negative light. The “dramedies” show men as one of two extremes, either insensitive or too sensitive, i.e., a whiny cry baby. And the typical drama shows men as being infallible, another falsehood.

So that made me wonder – who do you think is a positive role model on television? In America, the husband on the show, “Medium” is very nearly perfect. He’s supportive, but he's all man in that he does his “guy things” too. The boyfriend on “Ghost Whisperer” is another good example.

Non-Americans, please give examples of your country's positive role models on television.

  • Since many of you talk about hating feminists...?

"If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us."

    Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962)

Everyone hates something. They may not admit in polite society what and who they hate, but they do. For instance, I hate being around egocentric people who monopolize conversations, something I have done in the past but have been able to stop. Given Hermann Hesse’s postulation that we hate in other people what we don’t like about ourselves, what explains why so many of the anti-feminists here so loudly proclaim that they hate feminists? Can they be so similar to us that they hate us for reminding them of themselves?

  • What are your thoughts on U.S. Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee wanting women to be "Submissive Wives"?

Governor Huckabee gave a speech in 1998 to a Southern Baptist convention endorsing the Baptist convention's statement of beliefs on marriage that "a wife is to submit graciously to the servant leadership of her husband."

Do you think he will ever be able to work effectively with women in Congress and female leaders of other countries, given that he wants women to be subservient to their husbands? It seems to me that his views will restrict him from being objective with regards to women, their rights, and the need to help women of other countries.

  • It's Friday, who wants to go dancing tonight!?

It's the Friday between Christmas and New Year's, and I feel like dancing! Who's going with me?

And what's your favorite style of dance? Mine's Cajun and Zydeco!

  • Are you a good dancer, even if you hate dancing?

My boyfriend is a great dancer, even though he hates dancing. He will dance at special occasions, and if we go out to a place that has a band, he will pick ONE dance to dance with me, and that’s it for the night. I won’t force him to dance with me, so instead my girlfriends and I dance with each other instead.

So if you’re a good dancer, yet don’t enjoy dancing, then why don’t you enjoy it? Secondly, did you grow up around parents who danced? I did, and that has something to do with why I like to dance.

    And Happy Friday everyone!

  • With the death of Benazir Bhutto...?

Do you think this will cause a set back in women’s rights in Pakistan? Whether or not you liked her politics, she did bring Pakistan forward in women’s right to education, healthcare, etc.

  • Let’s rename GWS to mean Good Will Studies?

It’s the holiday season (I know Hanukkah’s over, though), and we need to share some love and peace with our fellow posters.

Can I ask for those of you who like to pick on other posters to just “let it go” and be nice for a change?

  • What is wrong with Yahoo Answers today?

They're not showing all the questions, all of a sudden Kate Lomax is the Top Answerer with 66 correct answers (I don't have a problem with that part), and they're not posting questions quickly enough.

Did they lose their main server?

  • What is the most inane conversation you've had just to get laid?

When my boyfriend (and the ones before him) start talking about cars, and HEMI engines, and carburators, my eyes glaze over because I could care less about these things. However, if it's important to him, I'll participate in the conversation as much as I can because it'll make him happy, and later on, he'll make me happy, so to speak.

Conversely, if I start talking about cooking, or horoscopes, or tarot cards, etc., he'll talk about it (more so at the beginning of the relationship) because he knows that if he does, he'll probably get laid.

So the ends (getting laid) justify the means (talking about stuff I don't care about).

What's the stupidest thing you've ever talked about just to get laid?

  • Movies where the lead woman is a prostitute, or the guy's wife is dead?

Why is it that with many of the movies I've seen, the women are prostitutes, i.e., "Pretty Woman" and "Milk Money", and the movies where the guy is the lead character, i.e., "Dan in Real Life" or "Martian Child", the guy's wife is dead. The number of women who are prostitutes, and men who are widowers is statistically a small fraction of society.

So why does Hollywood pigeon hole the women in a man's life into either being prostitutes or dead? Why can't the story line be about a regular woman or a man who's divorced?

  • Does not being married make you work harder at the relationship?

A friend told me his theory about relationships. He said that unmarried couples work harder at keeping a relationship together because if it would be so easy to end it (just move out), then by staying together you are making more of an effort to stay together.

Many married people I know won't get divorced because it would cost too much, both financially and emotionally, so they stay together in spite of the relationship problems. My parents were good examples of this.

I am not suggesting that married couples don't have to work on their relationships because a good relationship is based on love and respect for each other, and a continuing compromise when you have differences.

But do you feel that married couples work harder because they have so much to lose, or do unmarried couples work harder because they have nothing to lose?
