  • do roosters nest? Is this odd behvaiour?

We have bantum silkies, 2 roosters and 4 hens. I haven't paid that much attention to them before other than giving food, water and closing up the pen at night, but a few days ago two hens produced 3 chicks between them so I go out in the pen occasionally to ooh and ah. While I was sitting there at lunch time today, the two remaining hens came up also stood there watching the chicks for a few minutes and then started nesting too (perhaps they are broody too?). Then one of the roosters did the strangest things - he nestled down into one of the nests and picked up some straw and threw it over his back.

Is that normal behaviour for a rooster? What's he doing? I thought only hens nestled down like that?

  • one egg hatched, two more about to - but mother hen stopped nesting on eggs?

This is a bantum silky hen. She was a very good at nesting, never saw her off the nest. Two days ago the first chick appeared and she has been taking care of it very well. Of the remaining eggs, two eggs are starting to hatch - small crack in the shell, lots of chirping and tapping noises - but the mother hen has abandoned those eggs and is busy caring for her chick.

I have removed those eggs and placed them under a light bulb. Is that the right thing to do? Should I put them back with the mother hen even though she is neglecting them?

  • how to answer selection criteria when I don't have the experience requested?

The job I am applying for has a selection criteria that says "Experience working in the _____ industry."

I don't have any experience working in that industry nor do I have anything close to it.

I am in the process of changing my career and near the final stages of finishing a diploma in the industry, but I don't have actual experience. I know I can do the job I am applying for as it is entry level.

How should I respond without using negative phrases such as "Although I don't have experience..."?

  • can humans' body clock adjust to different length day for survival on other planets?

Say we do have the capabilities to colonise another planet, would humans be able to survive with a different day/night hours? How would we adjust? Just say humans colonise a planet with a 22 hour rotation, would we sleep for an hour less every day? Would we have to change how often we eat as well? I can't imagine adjusting my sleeping patterns or my digestive system coping with it.

  • 100years ago - Aussie English with American spelling?

I am going through Australian newspaper archives of 100 years ago and have noticed that some words have American spelling for example, honor, not honour; color not colour. But other words, such as 'programme' have the British spelling.

So what's the deal with that? Did Australians once use American spelling? When did it switch back to all-British spelling?

  • where to find the rest of the "Successful Baking" recipe card series?

More than ten years ago I was subscribed to the Successful Baking recipe card series. You know the type - every week a half dozen cards would arrive costing a few dollars. I ended up with an entire folder full but then cancelled because it was costing too much money.

Anyway, i would now like to complete the series. But not sure how to find it.

The series is called "Successful Baking", the cards say "printed in USA" the binder says "printed in Australia". There is this number printed on the cards: 0901-20-043

I looked on Amazon and it wasn't there. Google revealed nothing.

Anybody have this at home and wants to offload it?

  • What's the best route to drive into Brisbane this Tuesday morning?

I'll be driving into Brisbane from the Wide Bay area on the Bruce highway, and going to Greenslopes which is inner-city on the south side. I will have a trailer load of furniture.

Bearing in mind it will be Tuesday morning around 9am that we will be entering Brisbane and this will be first day back to school as well as the usual peak hour, what is the best route to take to avoid traffic?

Via the gateway bridge? or the Inner City Bypass? Is there any roadwork anywhere?

  • can an expired NSW driver's licence be transferred to a Queensland licence?

A friend of mine is currently overseas for three months. His NSW driver's licence expires next week and we are in the middle of renewing it via the internet. However, when he returns to Australia at the end of the month he'll be living in Queensland. So I wonder if it would better/easier/cheaper to wait until he gets to Queensland to transfer his expired NSW licence into a Queensland one.

  • Are cats naturally more dominant than dogs?

I grew up with cats and dogs and the cat was always dominate in the relationship. Many times our cat would take over our dog's bed and/or kennel, and our dog would not try to remove the cat nor try to get on the bed. If our cat started a play fight, the dog would back off if the cat got too rough. But this same dog is the alpha dog when with other dogs, and also at times tries to dominate humans. But always submissive with the cat.

I have seen many photos on the internet of one cat sleeping on the dog's bed while the dog is shivering in the cold.

    For example:

    and

    http://failblog.org/2008/03/09/basket-dominance/

So - are cats more dominant than dogs??

  • Is it okay to leave off husband's name on baby congratulations card?

A friend of mine recently had a baby. I have a present and card to give her but I just can't seem to bring myself to write her husband's name on the card. I can't stand him, barely have anything to do with him, and we don't ever talk about him in conversation. I have never told her my feelings about him but I'm sure she has picked up on it. For example, when she asks me to her place she adds "and Jim won't be there".

I feel like a fake if I put his name on the card, but at the same time, I don't want to offend her as she does love him. I wonder if it isn't such a big deal to leave his name off the card?

  • How do surgeons physically cope with long procedures?

I hear that some procedures can take half a day. What do surgeons do about toilet breaks? How about thirst and hunger? What about standing up with their head bent over for that length of time?

I know that if a few hours pass and I don't get food I feel light-headed and can't think properly. How on earth do surgeons cope with such complicated and serious tasks?? Isn't there long-term affects of standing up for such a long period of time? Veracious veins, RSI?

  • What's the lowdown on mobile phones in Australia?

I've been living in Japan for the past five years and I am returning to live in Australia soon. When I first came over, back in 2003, the phones weren't compatible as Australia used the SIM card system and Japan did not. However, I used my 3G Japanese Softbank phone in Australia when I came back for a visit.

Do you think it is possible that after cancelling my Japanese service, I can start an Australian service like Optus etc, with my current Japanese phone?
