  • Did the house burn up or did it burn down?

For example, "the house where I lived in 1952 burned down" or "the house where I lived in 1952 burned up"

    Thanks

  • For knitters old and new: What are the pros and cons of 'throw' method vs 'pick' method?

I learned knitting fifty years ago from an older woman in the neighborhood and she taught me to carry the yarn in my left hand and "pick" the yarn for each new stitch ... while I never achieved journeyman status, I considered myself pretty good at scarves, mittens, hats, afghans, a sweater now and then. In the last couple of years I find myself in a lobby full of knitters each week as our children are in dance class ... all of these other knitters "throw" the yarn. I finally got inspired to find my old needles and resurrect the old skill. Three hats, 8 pairs of mittens and four scarves since September, now I'm ready for some serious knitting. Are there advantages to the 'throw' method that would pay me to retrain my hands and brain; are there any knitters out there who still 'pick'; are there any who use the two methods interchangeably, and if so, are there times when one method is better than the other?

  • I have a 30 year old bottle of Cointreau ... is it safe to use?

We found this 3/4 pint bottle in my in-laws' liquor cabinet; we figure 30 years because that is the last time we had a dessert and demi-tasse gathering at their house. It was opened then; perhaps we used three or four shots that evening. I find crystalized sugar under the metal screw on top; otherwise the remaining liquid appears to be clear and clean. I'm not an expert on liqueurs ... would this still be good for cooking or baking?

  • Laundry quandary ... where should I start?

After two weeks with broken washing machine, new one was delivered today. I've done a couple of emergency loads at my mom's, but mostly laundry has stacked up: linens from two beds from two bedding changes; towels from two people from two bathrooms; shirts, jeans, etc. I want to get started at 6:00 am; I am home all day; which load should I do first?

  • Knit two, yo, slip one as if to purl ...?

I must have knitted a mile or more of scarves with this pattern, I think multiple of six stitches, kind of a lacy rib effect ... but that was 40 years ago. Can anyone refresh my memory?

    Thanks!

  • Deodorizing car after windows were left open in rainstorm?

I left the windows open overnight in the longest dryspell I've ever seen. You guessed it: had a real gully washer around 3:00 am. 4 inches of water in the floor wells, soaked the seats, etc. As soon as we discovered my error, we sucked out water with shop vac, left the car open, mats in the sun, etc. Well, I guess we closed it up too soon ... grandma and my daughter claim it smells like a wet dog (I have stuffy sinuses, I can't detect smell). How to clean up this mess, without too many noxious chemicals; and without perfume to mask the smell?

  • Looking for plants that will tolerate planting in new cemetery--no shade, no winter protection; facing west?

Two new graves in my family; one is 50 miles away and has to tolerate neglect. No shade is available; both cemeteries allow everything except trees. Dwarf evergreens are allowed. Southwest Michigan, summers getting warmer and drier. Any suggestions?
