  • If I write code for a personal project, can I use it in future jobs?

e.g. writing a PHP library while I am unemployed.

Could I use it at my next job? What about the one after that?

  • Musicbrainz alternative?

Is there any other database which allows lookups of individual tracks but does not require running a closed source, proprietary fingerprinter (i.e. genpuid)?

freedb seems to require the whole album, which isn't going to work in my case.

  • Why must I live in this pathetic country?

Why do I only hear complaints about the US government? Have you ever heard a legitimate, properly justified response to any of these complaints? Or are they all "Heil, mein Fuhrer... wait, I mean Mr. President"?

  • Are the Splinter Cell games any good on PC?

I played the first few on PS2, but now all I have is a PC. The thing that worries me is movement. With a joystick, you have full range of speeds to move, but I don't see how that could happen on the PC.

  • What color suit looks good on white guys?

My parents want to get me a suit as a graduation gift. I have a black one already. What other color would be good? I was thinking grey, but I don't remember seeing many white guys wearing grey suits.

Please don't say white.... It doesn't match my personality at all. I'm looking for something darker like grey or another black one or even brown.

  • How do I stop these emails from Facebook?

    Hi myname,

Here's some activity you may have missed on Facebook.

person1, person2, person3, and 4 other friends have posted statuses, photos and more on Facebook.

You have missed some popular stories:

    person4 likes person2's photo.

    person4 commented on person5's status.

I looked under "Account Settings" / "Notifications" but I could not find anything related to these. All of the notifications listed there are about people doing something to my photos or related to my activity. I don't want to get messages about other people's photos that I haven't even looked at!

  • Which funny movies are good for gifts?

I have to buy gifts for 3 couples that I only see once a year. I have no idea what they like, so maybe funny movies will be a safe choice. Can anybody recommend some?

  • I need several copies of the same passport photo?

Is there a cheap way to make copies of an existing passport photo? The copies have to be identical (at least to each other), and they must be on the glossy photo paper. Last time I went to Walgreen's for a new photo and 2 copies, it cost me like $12. Now I need at least 5 copies :(

Sorry, I know nothing about printing photos!

  • Why must guys confess to girls?

I don't see why guys are required to do this but girls are not. Sure, there are exceptions, but the general media and societal agreement is that guys should confess/ask girls out/etc. I know girls have a lot to worry about. But we are 50/50 equals! I would gladly take on some of those worries if I had someone to share mine with! WHY?!!?! WHY MUST I FEEL SO ALONE!??!?!!

  • Sample without replacement from finite population?

Suppose we sample without replacement from an urn with 8 marbles, one of which is marked. What is the expected number of trials to draw the marked marble?

This seems to come from the negative hypergeometric distribution with N=8, M=1, and m=1. So the expected value would be m(N-M)/(M+1) = 7/2, but this seems a little counter-intuitive. I would have expected the answer to be 4.

  • How to calculate the expected number of trials before the first success?

It's similar to the binomial distribution, but only considering the first trial.

  • Skullcandy earbuds bass volume?

I am considering buying some Skullcandy earbuds because I heard they are quite sturdy (I'm always having to buy new earbuds because they stop working). But I also heard the bass is a little too much for some people. I'm not crazy about bass, so I'm wondering how bad it actually is and if I should still give these a try.

  • My head starts going in circles?

Sometimes, when I get really drunk, I feel like my head is going in circles. I feel like my thoughts very quickly pass through some cycle and return to the beginning, only to repeat again at a faster rate. Eventually, this rate becomes so much that I get scared of what will happen next? Has anyone else experienced this? What happens at an angular velocity of infinity? ;)

  • Could I be a middle or high school teacher?

I am finishing up a master's degree in computer science. I'm a teaching assistant this semester, and I am really enjoying it.

The only problem is that I am a little shy. I am not really nervous speaking in front of my students. In fact, I find it exciting and satisfying. But my teaching needs a lot work. I have trouble speaking clearly and projecting my voice, for example. But these things are improving with time and experience.

I would really like to teach middle school or high school math or science or even maybe ESL. I've been thinking about it ever since high school. Now that I've actually gotten the opportunity to teach semi-regularly and am really enjoying it, I am also worried that this is some kind of temporary infatuation. How do I make sure that teaching is something I want to make a career out of?

  • Why am I jealous of people in unskilled and/or nontechnical jobs?

(like cashiers or fast food workers or even teachers) When they go to work, there aren't any catastrophic consequences if they make a tiny mistake. They just fix it and go on. But if I mistype a command on my keyboard, the effect could very well be irreversible or very expensive/time consuming to fix. There isn't any unfathomable problem they have to solve. They just have to show up and do their work. Then they can go home. When I go home, I'm still worrying about the problem I am supposed to be solving. It is so stressful, and I am really starting to feel burnt out.

Of course teachers have to worry about their students, but to some extent their obligations end when they finish their lesson plans, grading, go home for the evening or weekend, etc. People (or at least I) realize that such jobs require experiences from outside the workplace as well. Things like, oh, interaction with other people? :) Technical jobs don't require nearly as much of that. Mine requires almost none of it. The people I work with almost always prefer email, and they are very cold when you try to talk to them in person.

I realize they have their own problems, and I realize all technical jobs do not have the problems I mentioned (but I suspect they are more likely). I've heard it's difficult to find a unskilled job in the first place, for example. But it's difficult in my field, too, and here there are a lot fewer places to apply. All jobs require concentration and hard work, but I would be able to concentrate better if I could relax sometimes and take a walk in the park or something. I wish I could find the fast-forward button so I can turn it off.

I should clarify something: I am a graduate student, but I am speaking about "work." I am employed by my university, and I have responsibilities other than studying as well, so it's really not all that different. And I have spent time in industry as well, so I'm not basing my opinions solely on academia, either. This is partly what makes my very concerned about what will happen when I finish graduate school.

I am sorry for giving you so much to read.

  • Getting really depressed about school, work, and life?

I'm in a really hard graduate-level computer science course where groups of 3 work on homework together. I understand what the homework questions are asking, and I know the general approach I need to take, but I can't think of specific answers. I've spent several hours trying to solve these problems, but I can't solve a single one. The answers just seem to come naturally to the other two in my homework group. I feel really bad because we are meeting tomorrow to discuss the last few problems of the homework, but I haven't contributed anything at all to the solutions. I'm even having trouble understanding *their* solutions! I hate this feeling, and it makes me worry about how I'll do on exams.

This is my last semester before I graduate. I want a job in a completely different (already selected) field, and I'm only completing this degree so I'll have something to fall back on. But it seems like I will have to dedicate my life to get these 4 credit hours, and with my current progress, it doesn't seem like even that will guarantee me a passing grade. I can't drop the course and pick up a different one because of certain degree requirements. I don't even want this degree, and now I'm being told that I have to be miserable for 4 months to finish it? I'm just too scared to leave in case things don't go well in my new career path.

I'm sitting here trying not to start drinking or giving up and going to sleep. I just feel so stuck. I've been taking breaks (I've been working on this homework off and on for 3 days now). I've been getting plenty of sleep. I don't know what's wrong! Please someone help me.

  • Do you have to cook meat as soon as you open it?

If you only need half of the package for example? Or can you just put it back in the refrigerator/freezer?
