  • Calculus problem?

    You are standing on the edge of a slow moving river which is one kilome- ter wide. You need to get back to your camp which is one km up river on the opposite side. You can swim 2 km/h and you can walk along the river bank at a rate of 3 km/h. What distance should you walk along the river bank, and how long will it take you to get back to your camp?

  • Optimization problem?

    Square corners are to be cut out of a rectangular 12 by 24 inch piece of cardboard to form an open topped box. What size should the cut squares be to maximize the volume of the box? (you do not need to calculate the maximal volume, just the size of the square.)

  • Find a and b to make this continuos?

    2/(x+2) x<-4

    mx+b -4<x>4

    x-4/(sqrt(x)-2) x>4

    I know you have to find the limits at each point. So

    lim x--> -4- =2/-4+2=-1

    Should be lim x-->-4+ =mx+b=-1 We sub in the -4 but not sure how to simplify from there.

    For the second you would simplify the radical by multiplying top and bottom by sort(x)+2. = (x-4)(sort(x)+2/(x+2).

    Is this on the right track?

  • Simplify Radicals?

    I have (x+3)/sqrt(9x^2+5x)

    I thought you would just multiply top and bottom by sort(9x^2-5x) to clear the radical. However, the answer shows sort((x^2+6x+9)/(9x^2-5x)

    What have they done here?

  • Trig Interval?

    Find all x in the domain (0,2pi) that satisfy

    4cos^2(x)-sin^2(2x)+5sin^2(x)=4

    I used double angle formula to get

    4+cos(2x) - 1-cos(4x) + 5-cos(2x)

    ----------- ----------- ----------

    2 2 2

    And I'm not sure if this is right or if it is where to go from here?

  • Trig Domain Question?

    Find the domain of

    F(x)= Sqrt(tan2x+pi)

    So I made this sqrt(sin2x+pi/cos2x+pi)

    And the domain would not exist where cos2x+pi=0

    I'm not sure where to go from here?

    Also, since its all square root x can't be negative?

  • Absolute value question?

    0 < abs(x-2) <1/2

    So treating these as two inequalities I get

    0< abs(x-2)

    x<2 x>-2

    AND

    abs(x-2) < 1/2

    x>2.5 x>1.5

    So to write in interval form

    (-infinity, -2) U (1.5,2.5)

    Is this correct??

    Thanks for the help

  • Solving trig ratios?

    cos(x)= -(1/8) and between pi and 3pi/2

    using pythagorean theorem I get

    adj=1

    opp=sqrt(65)

    hyp=8

    sin(x)= -(sqrt(65)/8)

    tan(x)= sqrt(65)/1

    cot(x)= 1/sqrt(65)

    sec(x)=-(8/1)

    csc(x)=-(8/sqrt(65))

    Although the program says these are wrong except for sec(x).

    I'm not sure if I messed up the process or just the negatives. Since its in the bottom left corner I thought everything would be negative except for tan and cot.

    Thanks for the help

  • Wireless connectivity problems?

    I have a d-link router and a macbook pro. And each time I wake up my computer I need to shut off my wi-fi and then turn it back on to connect to the network.

    Also, my sister's iPad and our wireless printer have trouble maintaining a connection to the router.

    What could the problem be?

    Thanks

  • Statistics Help. Conditionally probability?

    13.4% of text messages are spam. of all spam 17% contain both free and txt. of all non spam messagees 6% contain botht the word free and txt. Given that the message contains both free and txt, what is the probability it is spam?

    I tried by creating a tree diagram. And got P(A &B)=(0.134)(0.17)=0.02278 and P(B), which is that the message contains both, =0.07474. Then, 0.02278/0.07474= ~30%.

    However, the answer is actually 50%, how do they get this?

  • Chev truck problems? Rear diff?

    I have a 91 chev 1/2ton reg cab short box. I just replace the idle sensor cause it was stalling out when idling and starting. Then I went over a series of pothole. Right after when I was braking there was an really loud bang. I then noticed my park brake light came on. However the light shut off next time I pressing the brake. Following that I took a look around the truck and saw nothing loose or leaking. I then drove my truck to work and it seems to have no lasting issues. What happened? What should I do? Could it be a diff issue or tranny?
