  • How do I book my flight for my year abroad?

I'm going to Israel from August to June, on a gap year, studying abroad. None of the travel websites will sell me a round-trip ticket for June 2009--it's too far in the future. Any advice for booking my flight (and getting a good rate. I'm 17, between college and high school if that matters)?

  • Travelling abroad on a cancelled passport?

I recently renewed my passport (I'm 17 so I needed to renew in person with my old passport). The US State Department mailed me back my old passport with the word "canceled" stamped in. My new passport has yet to arrive. There is still a year left on the old, cancelled passport. So without the word "cancelled" it would be definitely be valid. I may need to go abroad tomorrow. If the new passport does not arrive in the mail, will I be allowed to use the old one?

  • U Maryland ($27000) vs U Michigan ($42000)?

I'm accepted out of state at both michigan (LSA honors) and maryland (CP scholars), but maryland is offering me an $8000 scholarship. I definitely prefer Michigan, but I cannot decide whether the difference is worth $15000 each year for my family. I want to study political science, but the Michigan Organizational Studies program is something unique I would definitely apply to. If I go to Maryland, my family will pay and everyone will be happy. If I go to Michigan, I may have to take on some debt and my family will be giving me guilt trips for the next four years.

  • Why did the Spanish tolerate Philip II?

Philip II was a bad ruler. He screwed up the economy, lost the armada, imposed theocracy, and especially was bad to the poor majority.

The Netherlands successfully revolted against Philip II. They weakened him. So why didn't the Spanish do the same?

  • Suggested workout regimen for a lanky teenage guy?

Hi, could you suggest the best workout plan for me? I'm thinking of joining a nice gym

    My body:

    -17 years old

-I'm 6 feet tall, 135 lbs. so real skinny and lanky, long skinny feminine legs

    -Scoliosis, not great posture

-Not at all flexible, I cannot get close to touching my toes and my neck always stiffens up

-Low confidence in my body image

    -Not too energetic

    My fitness

-Never built muscle before seriously, though I've dabbled and I can handle the machines fine

-I can run ~6:30 mile so I'm not totally out of shape but I'm not tiptop either

-I am really bad with motivation, always procrastinating

    My goals

-To look good clothed, by broadening my upper body, sculpting muscles, etc.

-To feel a sturdy, solid body

    Thanks so much for input!

  • I'm 17. Every day, my mom yells at me for having no friends. Is that psychologically damaging behavior?

I'm a guy with friends, just not any really close ones. All the time my mom yells at me, "why aren't you with friends?," "I saw two kids from your class in the mall, why don't you ever do that stuff?", etc. I do go out a considerable amount, just not as much as others. I hear her talking to my dad all the time about it how I'm not normal. She doesn't propose any solutions other than rubbing it in my face. My dad doesn't like her saying these things. I usually ignore it but sometimes I yell back. Is this situation likely to cause me psychological harm?

  • Deathly Hallows omits how Voldemort was Harry's father. Did he rape Lily? How could Hagrid be a death eater?

I just read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows online, and Rowling seems to beat around the bush in terms of Voldemort being Harry's father. She is way too euphemistic when discussing how that happened. It seems like Voldemort raped Lily, but it's really unclear.

Also, Hagrid was a death-eater all along, and he cursed Snape so he'd kill Dumbledore. But Hagrid never even finished Hogwarts! How could Hagrid have had such a high level of knowledge to be an important death eater? I can understand him running errands for Voldemort, but come on! How did Hagrid know how to do the imperius curse?

  • Help! 300 songs are missing from my Real Player Library!?

I opened up realplayer and there are about 300 songs that were there earlier today but now they are gone. I'm sure the files still exist on my harddrive, but my harddrive is not particularly organized, with several different parts and folders and things are kind of hidden. Is there any way to explain why these tracks just disappeared and how can I get them back easily? Is RealPlayer known to be bad for this sort of thing?

  • Are there defense manufacturers that invest in the news media in order to sway public opinion in favor of war?

If so, give some examples. I heard some guy talking about this but I'm not sure I believe it.

  • Could somebody explain the ways that fluids move?

I understand the basics of Bernoulli's equation, but that is about it. I have a final exam tomorrow, and my textbook is rubbish for this topic. What formulas should I use if I'm given a problem? What concepts and prior knowledge should I know if given a problem to find a minimum flowing velocity or the nature of a flow, or how far away a flow will reach?

I know that I am asking for an explanation of an entire topic, but I only need an answer at the high school level. I guess I'm being optimistic that somebody wil take the time to help me out.

  • Why are we pulled towards a fast train moving through a station? Why do air currents make open doors shut?

I'm studying for my high school physics exam, so please answer in that regard. Also, if you could explain how the answers relate that would be cool.

  • what property does this physics formula find?

    Something equals

(volume final - volume initial) / (volume initial * change in temperature)

What is that something? What unit is it in?

  • I'm a caddie... should I help my golfer's cheat?

So a golfer asks me to put a ball down in a spot that would be in his favor. Clearly cheating. He is paying me to basically be his servant and I am supposed to do what he tells me.

I am an ethical person and I feel that I should refuse to cheat for a golfer. Fine. However, what about a round of golf where cheating is the norm. I'm talking about buddies who get more fun out of cheating and playing tricks on each other than winning. That is basically why they are there and they are all expecting each other to cheat. So is it OK?

  • Did the many radical movements of the USA in the 1960s cause a the left-right polarization we see today?

Yes? No? What were some of the other overriding (not specific to a single group but American history as a whole) effects of 1960s radicalism?

    7 AnswersHistory1 decade ago
  • Historically, why were the US 1960s suddently a good time for the civil rights movement and counterculture?

Please speak as to the major overriding societal factors. Yes, Martin Luther King Jr. was a skilled leader, but what about the times allowed for such ideas.

Sure, the kids were afraid of going to Vietnam, but why was Vietnam the first American war to cause some outrage? It certainly was not the only pointless one.

Granted, the new generation had just been supressed by the 1950s, but is that really reason for such a radical shift in American culture?

I understand that blacks were mistreated under the Jim Crow laws, but they had been mistreated for centuries!

What was it about the 1960s that made is so conducive to radicalism?

    7 AnswersHistory1 decade ago
  • What major points do US historians disagree about when interpreting the radical movements of the 1960s?

Other examples of such debates pertaining to different issues would be:

    ***

-The extent of advancement and size of populations in pre-Columbus America

-The intent of the constitution and founding fathers

-Whether or not President Jackson actually promoted democracy

-How we should see slavery as it fits into our understanding of broader US history

-The causes of the civil war

-Whether or not the frontier represented an ideal of individualism

    -The motivations behind progressive reformers

    -Causes of the great depression

-The radicalism of the New Deal

-The morality of dropping the atomic bomb

    -Justification of the Vietnam War

    ***

So along those lines, what are the issues regarding radical movements and civil rights movements and counterculture etc. that historians are disagreeing about?

  • I'm a teenager I just slipped and my wrists got cut I have a job interview for a camp counselor job tomorrow.

They'll think I'm suicidal, but I'm not! What should I do? I'll try to cover it with a long sleeve shirt, but if they notice? Also, what kind of questions (unrelated to the wrist) might they ask? If they ask about diversity, how do I answer without sounding mad racist?
