What changes occured because of celebrity political activism during the Sixties?

I'm looking for overriding historical trends here

Update:

Actually, my question is looking more for the way the political process changed, not just policy changes.

You will not find a direct tie or linkage between "celebrity" activism and political process or policy change. (I was smack in the middle of the 60's). You will only find indirect linkages. It was uncommon and unacceptable in general for celebrities to cross over and out of their professional people to speak out on an issue. Why? They had no credibility in almost every case.

Where celebrity activism had its greatest influence was in music and arts. Major political issues of the time (war, racism, sexism, education, equal opportunity) became central topics surrounding middle America and the college age youth of America in television, news, music, and theatre.

This change was fostered and led by musicians, lyricists, and playwriters.

The constant reminders that our country was not living up to its own promise was inescapable. By the mid to late 60's, citizens were demanding that their leaders in government and commerce be held accountable.

The citizenry became more aware, informed, and knowedgeable. When the time came to vote, they began putting into office legislators and Presidents who were mandated to change the existing social order.

Performers like Dylan, Peter/Paul/Mary, Baez, Beatles kept social issues in the spotlight whereby college students (militant and pacifist) battled in the streets and on campus for change.

Political issues then created their own set of celebrities (Eldrige Cleaver, Lennie Bruce, Bobbie Seals, etc.) some of whom are still alive and kicking.

Four decades later, the use of polls has now become ubiquitous in shaping the political agenda, process, and rhetoric. The use of social polls lept in the 60's and continue to this day.

The changes were political, social and environmental. People against the Vietnam War, women's rights, civil rights, people against nuclear weapons and power plants and people demanding a clean-up of the environment. I think people started feeling stronger about using their Freedom of Speech and they were sick of the government screwing up.
