  • Meaning of "act in deposit manners"?

What is the meaning of "to act in deposit manners?" I encountered the phrase on a Wiki page about Rome in this context:

All members of the dynasty drew political power from their family ties to Julius Caesar and Augustus. While members often acted in deposit manners, the key principle of the dynasty was upholding the Republic facade of the Empire, known as the Principate, in which the Emperors were not seen as monarchs buts as "first citizen".

From context, it appears to mean "to act in a manner opposite of citizenship," in other words, ruling corruptly or oppressively.

I wonder, too, if it's not a typographical error. Did the author intend "act in despotic manners?"

  • 4000 watt generator for 30 amp 120v RV?

The factory cable on my travel trailer is 30amp 120v = 3600watt capacity. I'm considering purchasing a 4000w propane generator, but it has two 120v 15amp outlets. I tested my neighbor's 5500 watt generator using one of its 120v 15amp receptacles with my travel trailer (I bought a 15amp to 30amp adapter for $5 at WalMart) - but the AC kept tripping the generator fuse. What is my best option? Find a generator wired for 120v 30amps? Rewire the one I'm going to buy?

  • How to boost a 758 credit score?

I have not had any debt in years, and my credit score is static at 758. Would a personal loan now boost my score within a year in a tangible way? How much could it go up? +2 to 760, or +10 to 768? And would a 760 or 768 qualify me for a lower rate on, say, a $100k construction loan versus 758?

  • Percentage of land beneath equator?

I calculated the amount of land beneath the equator by painstakingly measuring in Google Earth at 5,377.51 miles, or 21.619%. I included freshwater rivers and bodies in my measurement and omitted oceanic bodies. Does anyone have a reference to scientific literature related to this metric? A book, journal, article?

  • Pick a company to invest $10k in US stock market gold/silver sector?

How do I pick one company over another? My goal is to sell at $15,000, whenever that happens. I don't need to money to live on - I have a good job, so I can be speculative.

For example, how would I go about comparing PAAS (Pan American Silver Corp) to MGN (Mines Management Inc)? I have access to charts, funamentals, earnings, etc. Is one better than the other? Are they both bad?

Does another company in the sector outshine the rest somehow?

  • Iberia Bank VP, Lousiana state rep candidate around 2000-2001?

I was acquainted with an Iberia Bank VP who lived in Lafayette, Louisiana in 2001 - a man in his early 40s whose name was "Russ" if I remember correctly. I went to his wedding in November, 2001 in Lafayette. I moved away and lost track of him.

He had recently been defeated in a state representative election - judging by the stack of yard signs in his garage, it was probably an election in 2000.

I have already checked the Louisiana Secretary of State's website and scrolled through election results - the only Russ I saw was Russ Wade, and that's not him.

Any Cajuns out there know who I'm talking about?

    Merci, cher.

  • What kind of pin is this (picture)?

It is highly polished stainless steel and has a magnetic button that holds the button to the back. It's 2 1/2 inches long, or 65mm.

It's not a tie clasp, not a lapel pin. So what is it?

  • Where to bolt ground wire, Chevy V8 305?

When they put a rebuilt V8 305 in my 1989 Chevy truck, they bolted the ground wire to a mounting bracket, not to the block. Lately the truck has been more and more difficult to start, and I think it is because the bracket is just a bad place for electrical conductivity. Starter, alternator, and battery are a-ok.

I want to bolt the ground wire directly to the block, and there's a threaded hole nearby. See photo:

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2507/3871368984_90a...

Is the threaded hole in the picture a good place for the ground wire (I would sand it down to shiny metal first)? If so, what are the dimensions of the proper bolt, or what's it called so I can ask for the right thing at the auto parts store?

Or is the ground wire supposed to be bolted elsewhere?

  • Help ID this science fiction short story?

I read this hilarious short story in 1978, and it was in a used school text book... so it was probably written in the 60s. The title may have been "So You Think You've Got Problems." Jewish humor / futuristic / science fiction. Protagonist says "Feh!" The plot centers on the ability to swap bodies (or swap consciousness), and the hilarious problems that arise.

It's probably in a volume of collected science fiction short stories. I've had no luck looking on Amazon / Half. Seeking author / ISBN / title. Would love to buy

  • What is the root of this quartic?

Of the four possible roots, I already know the approximation of the one I am interested in:

         ≈0.1729836581545961.

I need the symbolic (exact) expression for this root, probably containing square roots of square roots of rational expressions, something like:

         √(105√(167/8)

I get a couple steps past the depressed quartic in Ferrari's solution, but I have just never worked through this kind of exercise before, and I get lost.

So here is my depressed quartic:

         x^4 - 17x³ + (167/8)x² - (105/16)x + 153/256

In Excel, plugging in 0.1729836581545961 for x gives exactly 0. This is the only root I am interested in.

    Thanks!

  • Can you ID this older music video?

About 1993-1996, a white rapper guy moves through a series of 3D rooms up, down, and sideways smoothly as if there was no gravity. Singing something like "The Right Way," very repetitive, accompanied by a catch flute riff.
