  • Why do banana trees grow bananas?

I know, it seems lije a dumb question.

But since banana trees reproduce by sending out shoots from the ground, the actual bananas seem to serve no purpose. Other fruit trees have seeds in their fruit, which get dispersed when animals eat them.

Fruit from banana trees, since it usnt necessary for propagating the plant, seems like an evolutionary mishap and a waste of the banana trees nutrients.

  • how to convert regular sizes to vanity sizes...?

I volunteered to clean my cousin's house while she's out of town (dumb idea) and one of my jobs includes going through her laundry and throwing away things that don't fit anymore. Her mother told me that she went from a size 24/26 to a size 20/22. So of course, I threw away everything that was larger than a size 22. Simple.

The problem is, more than half of her clothes were purchased from plus size stores where the sizes say either 2, 3, or 4. How do those sizes compare to normal clothing sizes? I can't find any converters online. Is there an easy conversion, or do these stores pick these numbers at random? What should I be throwing out and what should I be keeping?

  • how to take straight photos?

Now I'm just a secretary, but my employer is having me do a lot of photography recently to put up on our company website. She has a Canon DSLR - I don't know specifically what type, but I know it was about $1200. It also has an attachable fisheye lense.

I'm definitely not a professional photographer. She is getting a little frustrated because the majority of my pictures come out slightly off-kilter. I told her I know how to fix them in photoshop, but she says she'd rather have me "do it right the first time."

Can anyone give me any tips for taking even, straight, horizontal pictures with a slightly heavy, unweidly camera?

  • I have great self-esteem... unless I'm with my boyfriend.?

I've been dating this guy for four months, and he's really wonderful. He's funny, he makes me laugh, he's very respectful to me and he is always telling me that I'm beautiful and he's lucky to have me. In a lot of ways, he's been very good for my self esteem, because he's helped me to see that I am a worthwhile person to be with. Most of the time, he makes me feel really good about myself.

I'm generally a happy, confident person. I go out with my friends, I attend free art classes with near-strangers and I am always able to carry on a conversation and get along with people without having any emotional problems. Sometimes, though, and I can't figure out why, I just start feeling so doubtful about myself, and it's ONLY when I'm with him. I know he doesn't do it on purpose, but there have been times when he's snapped at me for being too clingy when he's trying to get something done, and there have been other times when he mentions something in passing in a completely non-aggressive way, like telling me that the food I made is slightly undercooked and that he's going to go pop it in the microwave, and I get so upset. I don't get mad at him - rather, it makes me feel really bad about myself, and my self-esteem just drops through the floor and stays that way for the rest of the night. It's something that almost never happens when I'm with other people - if I make a mistake in front of anyone else, it's easy for me to shake it off and laugh - but when I'm with him it seems to be a weekly, sometimes daily thing that I end up crying over. He always tries to "fix it" right away by saying something stupid or by trying to give me a raspberry to make me laugh, but it usually makes me more mad at him. Even though I understand that it's his way of trying to make me happy, I feel like it means he doesn't care that I'm upset, he just wants me to be happy because our relationship is easier when I'm happy.

What makes it worse is the fact that he hates it when I cry, so I feel like whenever I get upset, I have to distance myself from him to keep him from being frustrated with me, rather than holding his hand or cuddling with him like I want to, which I think makes him feel like I'm being clingy. I feel like I'm being punished for being sad, which just makes it worse.

I don't understand why I feel this way so often. It's not fair to him that every little thing he says makes me cry, and it's not his fault. He tries really hard to keep me happy, but I always feel like I'm failing him if I get upset about something.

What am I doing wrong? How do I fix it? I'm worried that this is going to keep putting a strain on our relationship, and I'm worried that we're going to eventually break up because I'm such a crybaby over little insignificant things.

  • Do the police have access to gate codes for gated apartments?

A few days ago, a cop showed up on our doorstep demanding to talk to my cousin/roommate about some potentially illegal activities going on. She went through a slew of blaming people - her ex husband, her boyfriend's mom, etc etc. When she came home today, she declared that only I could be the one who called the cops on her because I'm the only one who knows the gate code to let them in.

I did not call the cops. I also assume that, being the police, they have access to things like that. Is this true? How do the police get into gated communities?

Please post a link so that I can share it with her and get her to stop giving me the evil-eye. T^T

  • How can I move my facebook "profile pictures" into other albums?

I'm finally organizing my facebook pics, and I already know how to move most of them around using the "edit album" button. However, I want to be able to take some of my pics from the "profile pictures" section and put them in other albums, like "pets" "family" "pictures of me". The profiles pictures album has no "edit album" option, and I don't want to reupload them because there are some fun conversations in the comments that I'd like to keep there.

Anyone know how to do this?

  • How can I become a better judge of character?

I'm starting to think there's no hope for me. I think everyone is a good person until they do something to make me think otherwise. I never meet people and decide immediately that I can't trust them or don't like them, which is something I like about my personality, but lately it's been coming back to bite me.

I dated a really sweet guy for over 6 months, until one day he unpredictably turned and became violent. I joined a martial arts class (thinking, I bet this kind of class only attracts a very good kind of person). For three months, everything seemed totally fine. I made friends, we talked, we high fived, and then suddenly one day everyone blocks me on facebook, and I'm asked to leave and not come back, and I still don't know why. If it was just one person, I'd be like, dude that guy has a problem. But it's EVERYBODY. And I didn't see it coming.

What am I doing wrong? How do I fix it?

I'm starting to worry. Like, if people I really trust can turn on me so quickly, how can I trust my friends? How do I know who's going to lie to me, who's going to hurt me, and who is a true friend who is safe to get close to?

  • Should I go back to school?

I graduated in December with an Animation degree. I was 18 and stupid when I started school, and I didn't realize what a useless and expensive degree this would be. I have $40,000 in loans and after 2 months, I'm having trouble getting a paying job. (I have a volunteer job, but all it gets me is experience).

I'm considering going back to school and doing a major in business management with a minor in Japanese. It's not as fun as animation, but it seems like it would be much easier to get a job with that degree. I could do it in 3 years, I think. Does this sound like a better idea than continuing to look for a job in animation?

  • Under the table work?

I am currently unemployed. I don't want to be unemployed. I want very much to have a job, and income, and financial freedom.

Problem is this: I'm currently living with my cousin who has a two-year-old son. She gets food stamp benefits and section 8 housing and cash benefits and all that fun stuff for being a single unemployed mom. If I start making money, my cousin loses her government benefits. Then, I have to pay for the rent ($1500/mo), food for 2 adults and a baby, as well as baby supplies, gas for two (an easy $350 a month), as well as my own student loans ($400/mo). Having even a minimum wage job would cause all of these expenses to become my burden.

You can see why me getting a job would hurt more than help. But I don't like sitting here in a free house, stagnating and not doing anything with my life.

What can I do that I won't have to report income on and lose my cousin's benefits? Preferably something legal...

  • Allergic to protein shake?

I'm diabetic, so the protein shake I drink is Advant Edge carb control. I really like the taste, but when I drink it, my whole mouth gets really, really itchy. It only lasts about five minutes, then I'm fine, and there are no other side effects. Do you think I should stop drinking them? Or is there a way to make the itching stop? Or should I just deal with it? I mean, it tastes good enough that I'm willing to deal with the itching if there's nothing else to do about it, I'd just prefer not to.

  • Looking for a sci fi book?

I'm looking for a book I read in late 2003 or early 2004. It was about a man - I don't remember his name - who lived in a futuristic society where people had discovered an ability to switch bodies with eachother. Some rich people would buy younger bodies and try to live forever. The main character would loan his body out to people who had to do dental work or surgeries, occupy their bodies while they would have been in pain, and then take his body back once they'd recovered. He had two friends. One was a girl, whose personality I don't really remember, and the other was a male artist. Near the end of the book, he made a bad deal with an old woman who wanted him to switch bodies for her while she was ill, until she got better, but she didn't tell him she was terminally ill and would never recover. At some point, they're running from the cops.

I really would like to read this book again, but i can't for the life of me remember what it's called. If it helps, the cover was blue.

  • Applying for jobs. What does tenure mean?

I'm actually helping a friend with a job search, but I don't know a lot of these words.

"Visual, article inspection, FAA/Aerospace experience a must, 2+ year tenure minimum, must be flexible to work weekends and overtime. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus. Visual acuity must be a minimum of 20/40 corrected."

Here, can you explain to me what the 2 year tenure minimum means?

  • What is there in coffee - besides caffeine - that could be making me sick?

Every time I drink coffee - whether it's from starbucks or ikea or my mom's kitchen - I get really jittery, shaky, and cold. I don't have a problem with caffeine, because I've been known to drink four or five cups of green tea in a short time and have no side effects. I'm in college, and you know there are just some days when coffee is a necessity, but I'm having a lot of trouble tolerating it.

BTW this started in the last two years or so, I never had a problem with coffee in high school.

  • Is it still called "sailing" if you're going out to sea in a motorboat?

I mean, it wouldn't be called "motoring" out to sea, that sounds dumb. But they're not technically sailing, they don't have a sail. So are they sailing out to sea? Or is there another word?

  • How to stop angry kids from making themselves throw up?

My grandma told me my 7 year old cousin will get so stressed about going to school that she will make herself sick - and not faking it, either. She'll have terrible migranes and vomiting, and then once she's allowed to stay home, it will go away. I thought, well that's not possible, but yesterday, a different cousin (totally unrelated by blood) was upset because his mom was leaving him with his aunt, and he didn't want her to leave, and he cried so hard he made himself puke three times in one hour. He is 13 by the way.

Why do they do this? And how can I help them to stop? They're not shoving fingers down their throats or anything, they just stress themselves into this illness very often, and I'm worried.

  • I'm looking for a couple of sci fi books.?

I read them a few years ago, and I can't remember the title or author for either. The first was about some genius kids who went to some school together. The main character was sent there after cutting his wrist and it was decided that he needed to be with people of his own intelligence level. I remember there was a set of twins, one of whom uploaded his brain into a computer, and to explain to his parents why their son is dead, they plopped his body in front of a train and let it get hit, instead of telling them what really happened. The girl the main character met supposedly died, but at the end he found out she uploaded herself into a computer so she's still alive.

Has anyone read this book and can tell me what it's called?

The other one was set in the future, after people figured out how to switch bodies with one another. There was a guy who would willingly switch bodies with people who had to get surgery or root canals, and they'd pay him for it. He had a friend who was a woman and a guy friend who was an artist, and at the end he ends up on the run from the cops for some reason, I think it's because he stole his body back from some old woman who was going to be in pain for the rest of her life because their contract wasn't expired yet.

Please? I want to read them again.
