  • Found iphone, how do I return? If not, how do I keep?

Back in August, I found an iPhone 4 on the ground. It was grimey and the protective case was grimey too. I just found it under some bushes in a neighborhood.

I tried turning it on. No charge. I took it home and showed it to my brother. He was a technician in a shop that worked on smartphones and laptops.

We charged it, then when he took a look at it, he said it was no longer in service and that whoever owned it probably cancelled their service on that phone. I'm not sure, but I think it's an AT&T phone, and it has one of those SIM card things.

He told me to look up on youtube how to restore it, which resets it, basically like new. Confident that my brother knew what he was talking about, I did. I've never owned a smartphone before and I don't really know much about smartphones, so I cleaned it up and kept it.

So far, I've just been using it to get wifi, but my brother says I should get it "jailbreaked" and "unlocked".

I trust my brother, but a few months after finding it, I'm wondering now: Was there a way to find the owner?

Will the carrier ACTUALLY get it back to the owner or will they just strip it for parts or restore it to resell it?

Are there websites where people put up notices for lost iPhones?

If I am unable to find the owner, how do I go about "jailbreaking" and "unlocking" this phone? I'm going to be out of the country and will be in need of a functioning phone as I go from one place to another.

  • Germans and Vietnamese: touching women they just met?

I have a friend who is studying abroad in Teubingen. The first day she's there, this Vietnamese guy who claims he's been in Germany for 8 years lets her use his internet (they don't have wifi in those dorms and her internet isn't set up yet) then asks her if she wants to go to the bar.

He doesn't speak English and she wants to practice her German.

She says yes, being underage in the US but not in Germany, and not wanting to pass up going to a bar. On the walk over there, he keeps putting his arm around her waist. She just steps further to the side away from him as they walk to the bar, but every once in a while he tries it again.

Then at the bar he pays for her drink faster than she can refuse. She wants to tell him she has a boyfriend then ditch him, but doesn't know the way back to the dorm building. Then on the way back, he puts his arm around her waist again as they walk, and again, she steps to the side away from him as they walk. When they get back to their building, they take the elevator up to the floor they both live on.

When the elevator door opens, she tells him that she has a boyfriend and quickly leaves the elevator and goes to her dorm room.

That was a few weeks ago.

Today, he invited her to hang out with him tomorrow and practice her German. She suggests 7PM and initially he says yes, then says no because he has a Judo class at that time, then asks her to meet him at 10PM. Being naive and not very assertive, she says yes. They agree to meet in the common kitchen of their dorm floor.

Um... should she worry about this dude?

I don't think Germans or Vietnamese are very "physical contact with strangers they just met" type cultures, so... do you think this guy is up to no good?

Or is there a cultural explanation for this?

    What's going on?

Is there a reason to worry?

  • What does this symbol mean?

It's two revolvers pointing downwards next to each other, symmetrically. I used to think it was associated with the Sex Pistols, but I'm not finding the symbol anywhere that's associated with them.

Again, it's two revolvers, with barrels pointing downwards, and the handles pointing away from each other.

    Like this:

    \\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////

    \\\\\\\==|| ||==///////

    \\\\\\\\\\ || || //////////

    \\\\\\\\\\ || || //////////

    \\\\\\\\\\ || || //////////

    \\\\\\\\\\\\\///////////////

So... is it the symbol of a rock band? Or a punk symbol of some sort? What does it mean?

  • Can't connect to the wireless at my friend's house, why?

I've been to plenty of other wireless networks, most (in not all) work fine. I'm at my friend's house, bring up the list of wireless networks, choose his, it says "windows was unable to connect to (his router's name)".

The window asking for the security key doesn't pop up. If I try connecting to his neighbors' routers, I get asked for the security key.

Another friend of his can connect her laptop, she has a Mac.

I'm running Windows 7 from my laptop.

What can I do to connect to my friend's wireless network?

  • What's the lowest monthly cost for a smartphone right now?

Unlimited calling, unlimited texting, internet access, unlimited downloading and a cloud program that lets me save and access music and other content I buy on different devices.

Samsung has a phone out, Windows has a phone out, and obviously there's the iPhone. I don't know what other smartphones are out there. Which one costs least each month with the services I want?

  • Is there a service like Steam but for music?

I like using Steam. I can just log onto my account from any computer and download games I've already bought.

Is there a service for music that works the same way? So I can just log onto an account and download music I've already LEGALLY purchased?

  • What can I take for a runny nose, but still be safe to drink alcohol?

Ugh, my nose is runny, I'm sneezing, sore throat. I haven't reached "contagious" stage and have been invited to a bunch of parties this week.

What can I take to calm the symptoms but will not interact with the alcohol I'll be drinking?

  • Why aren't we seeing any Vladimir Putin jokes?

We've heard the Chuck Norris jokes, and the Mr. T. jokes.

Its because they're both bad@$$es. Vladimir Putin is one too.

Whichever one of you finds or invents the best Putin joke in the Chuck/Mr. T format will win this one!

  • Job interview... what should I wear?

I'm going to a job interview for a cashier's position at a liquor store. The owner also owns a successful pawn shop and a few other local businesses.

What should I wear? Semi-casually or semi-formally? I'm guessing a full suit and tie is too much.

Keep my beard or shave? Its a clean beard well maintained beard, but some employers just don't care.

I figure since this is more of a blue collar position it might be fine. I don't know, what do you think?

  • How to and how NOT to write a resume?

Please only answer if you're one of the human resources people or any other individual in a business or company that ACTUALLY looks at resumes.

The advice I'm looking for is more of a formatting issue.

Is more than one page too much for a resume?

Using color on a resume or just plain black and white?

Is there anything that makes you ignore a resume after you see it?

Is there anything you especially look for in a resume?

Really, I'm looking for any advice of any sort from people who actually have to go through resumes and decide who to hire.

  • Légion étrangère????????????????????

I'm wondering what physical standards I have to meet to be accepted into the Legion.

How many kilometers per hour must I run? How long must I maintain this pace? How many kilos of equipment must I march with? At what speed must I march with all this equipment?

How good must my eyesight be?

How many situps, pushups and pull ups/chin ups must I do and in what time period must I do them?

Also, what else should I do to prepare myself before I try to sign up?

  • What's the exact wording of the oath a legionnaire has to take when he joins?

    Lets try this again...

When someone joins the Legion, what is the oath he has to take? I would like to know the exact wording.

Not the code, but the oath. The oath one must swear.

  • Don't know what to call this attitude problem, help me nickname it?

I have a friend who has a sort of occasional attitude problem. Its gotten him in trouble, it has alienated his friends and has interfered with his dating life as women tend to be rather turned off by it.

This is a basic description of the attitude or mood:

He scoffs, becomes a drama queen, his voice becomes nerdy, naggy and effeminate, his attitude becomes d-baggish, he turns into a diva of sorts and scolds whoever has disappointed him or irritated him.

Its made even more detrimental to him by the fact that its usually triggered by minor things that most people would brush off... like I said, its hurting him more than he realizes.

So, in order to help this friend, I have to come up with a name for... whatever this thing is.

  • Cat died, what could have caused it?

She was almost two years old, found her dead this morning. There was a small puddle of snot that had come out of her nose.

She had been in heat for the past few days, so she was inside.

What could have caused her sudden death?

I'd like to know because I have a 6 month old cat (one of the dead cat's kittens from the only litter she had) and am worried it may be something contagious.
