  • Will graduate with math degree...help?

So, I am a Junior now who will (hopefully) graduate next year. My major is mathematics (minoring in Physics) and my cumulative gpa will be about a 3.8 - 3.85 by the time of graduation. I was wondering, if I plan to apply to a prestigious grade school (my first choice is Carnegie Mellon), is this gpa acceptable? What would I need on my math GRE's to even think of applying anywhere good?

    Thanks!

  • A Children's Laptop from the 90s that teaches BASIC?

When I was little, I had a children's version of a laptop (you know - the 40-50 dollar things that only had a few games), and it had a program that taught you BASIC (the programming language). However, I tried looking all over the internet for it, but I cannot find it. Did anyone else have this "computer"? Has anyone even heard of it?

    Thanks!

  • Is (abs(x))^(2/3) differentiable at 0?

    |x|^(2/3) --> When I approach with both the left and right hand limits for differentiation (that is, lim as x-->c of f(x) - f(c) / x-c, where c is 0 in this case), I get infinity for both limits. I know that in order for the derivative to exist at a point, the right and left hand derv. limits must be equal. But does this count? Can someone please assist me?

  • The rank of matrices (a Linear Algebra inequality)?

How would I go about showing that for two matrices A, B, that the rank of (AB) (i.e. the rank of the matrix product of A and B) is less than or equal to the minimum of the rank of A and the rank of B?

    That is:

    rank (AB) ≤ min (rank(A), rank(B))

    Thanks so much! :)

  • My Rich Uncle Loan - WTF?

I took out a loan from MyRichUncle, a now defunct loan corporation. Does this mean I do not need to pay back my loan?

I'm sure Yahoo Answers is not the best place for this (ha ha), but if anyone could offer some insight, I would really appreciate it.

  • What parallels to qi exist in other non-Chinese cultures?

Qi, the concept of a vital breath, motive force, and moral will in Chinese culture, has parallels in other cultures as well. From my research, I have found a few other similar concepts: Num (in Africa), Prana (India), Pneuma (Greece), and Ha (Huna: Hawaii). I've read something about a parallel existing in the Koran (possibly called Nafas?), but I can't seem to find too much information about it.

Can anyone help me out? It would be greatly appreciated!

  • Zermelo set theory question!?

Okay...so, how would I show that every set other than the empty set contains another set as an element? i.e. there are no "set-theoretic axioms" (I don't think that is the correct word, but it's hard to read the handout!). Why do I know this is true?

    Thank you!

  • Western Union Identification?

I just recently lost my State Identification Card, and I now need to pick up money at Western Union. Is there anything else I can bring to acquire the funds sent to me? If I bring another type of state issued i.d. (e.g. social security card) and another type of picture identification (e.g a college i.d.) would it suffice? Is there a question of sorts they might ask to verify my identity?

If anyone has any experience with this, help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. :)

  • Shinto during Meiji period?

Now, I understand that the Meiji government tried to use shinto (the original Japanese "religion") to unify the country, but WHY exactly did they wish to do this? Was it for economic reasons? To increase the pace of modernization? Why did the leaders during the Meiji period feel that Japan needed to be unified?

    Please assist! Thank you. :)

  • Hurry! Hair Help! (Sorry for the alliteration...)?

I've always been a fan of Rita Hayworth, and I was wondering how I could get her signature red, curly-wave locks? I have somwhat-thick hair myself. If I got a perm with large rollers (not small, spiral ones), would that help at all? Also, for the color, my hair naturally is a medium warm brown (see here: http://i3.tinypic.com/xen9qx.jpg ). What color would I use? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Here is a picture of Ms. Hayworth to help in the process:

  • Who is the biggest style icon of all time?

In your opinion, who do you think was the biggest icon of fashion in history? It can be an actor, actress, model, singer, whatever. In my opinion, I think Grace Kelly personifies style, beauty, and grace (not ironically :) ).

  • A banal question- what is your favorite movie and why?

Usually my questions are of SOME substance, but I like some innocuous fluff now and then. What is your favorite film and why? (And try not to list extremely modern movies because I like the classics, and this is my question so therefore I am the ruler mwahh.)
