  • Requesting a day off during notice period?

    Hi,

    I've handed in my notice (finish 23rd June '17) as a school ICT technician to my employer, they are a managed ICT provider (SME type company) so that I can start my new job on 26th June '17. I have 4 days unused annual leave (accrued, but if I wasn't leaving I have 7 days left till the end of July).

    I need a day off on Monday 19th June to sign an employment contract and other paperwork with my new employer. I've asked for the day off but they've not replied back to me whether I can take it or not (normally they don't allow school term time off). When I asked informally my manager said, "What more do you want from us, you're leaving? Anyways, request the day off via the normal method".

    Am I entitled to reasonable time off like someone who is facing redundancy? What do I do if they say no? I feel that if they said no I would have to take it anyways as I could risk my offer of employment retracted and thus have no job and won't be able to apply for JSA.

  • Expiry to my first passport coming up (United Kingdom). Do I need to renew it before a trip to the Netherlands?

    Hi,

    My first passport is coming for renewal for October 2017 and I want to go to the Netherlands in June/July. I've read that some countries require you to have six months left on your passport before visiting and was wondering, since the UK and the Netherlands are both members of the EU does this six month thing apply? I'd like to renewal my passport after the trip.

  • Can someone that lent money to me ask for the money back early?

    Hi, I borrowed £300 from a close friend and promised to pay £100 per month. I've paid £100 on time last month and will pay the same this week with £100 left to pay. She is now demanding that I pay the whole amount early (£200 this week). I don't have the spare cash to meet this request and she doesn't care that it would leave me short.

    Can she do anything like small claims court? I'm keeping up with my side of the agreement.

  • What does this sentence mean?

    What does "Just booked a trip. We fly back in a Fokker. I really hope it isn't clean." mean?

    A friend posted this and makes no sense, why would someone want to fly in a dirty Fokker so is it a joke?

  • What's the point of Domestos Total Blast products?

    Hi, I have both Domestos Total Blast (Toilet Gel) and the normal Domestos Ultra Bleach. If I use the bleach product, it cleans the toilet bowl out fully i.e. dirt marks, stains etc. If I use the toilet gel it does nothing even after 8 hours. It seems to give the toilet bowl a slight (in my case) yellowish colour (same colour as the gel). Is this some marketed better but inferior product?

  • Do you get compensated for working at home?

    I'm doing an HR assignment and I was wondering... during your working day (let's say 7 hours a day working at home) you are using your own Electric, Gas (in winter), your computer, phone line and broadband.

    Apart from your wage, does a company reimburse you on top for using your own utilities?

    Many thanks

  • Finish university and my part-time employment?

    Hi,

    I’m currently a full time university student studying a Bachelor of Science degree in Computing with Business. I also have a part time job, I started it in 2007 and did the job for 4 years and then reduced my hours around my degree.

    I’d like to do another job after university as I’ve would have worked for my employer for 7 years next summer. I’m not too sure how I should approach this as I could continue that job part time and while I find another say “I’ve got a 6-10 week notice period on that one day a week job”. Or quit my job when university finishes and apply for JSA but then, I might be refused JSA for quitting work (although part-time) or quit 6 months ahead of this and not to be affected.

    What do you think is the best option to take? To me the JSA route seems easier as I won’t have to give a notice period.

  • University friend issues, feeling I should back-off?

    Hi,

    I have a friend at University that seems to be avoiding me. For example, if I was waiting in a corridor for an exam or lecture she would face away chatting to this particular guy only. She is lesbian so I don't think it's anything relationship related. Should I just back off? I'm not too sure what to do because we still have a year left on the course.

    I don't know what I have done personally for this, I've always been nice and polite to her.

    Thanks :-)

  • Why does the pseudo class hover not work correctly?

    Why in XHTML, CSS, jQuery does the first hover not work but the next ones within the <div> work? It's really frustrating me as the code is the same throughout. I'm trying to make text appear when one hovers over the question mark to display additional text.

    I'm good at XHTML and CSS but a bit shaky on Javascript / jQuery by the way this links to jQuery 1.5.1.

    Thanks in advance :)

    Double Money = Double.parseDouble(inputString);

    yearString = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How many years?");

    Double period = Double.parseDouble(yearString);

  • Problems because of lecturer with group assignment at University?

    Hi, i'm at a University in London and I had some group work for a module back in November. When he gave out the marks mine was missing but my three other team members were... I emailed him and said why don't I have a grade as I submitted the coursework. He replied at the time saying it was an admin error and he failed to see my name at the top also.

    I had put my name on the top, my ID number and signed and dated it at the bottom. The other team members go in a box called "Names and ID numbers of others working in the group". The three people went in here and got the grade.

    He stated that I also had the mark at the time so I left it.... think he would sort it out. How wrong I was. The end of the semester came and I still have no mark and looks like I'd have to do retakes of this if he does not stop giving me problems.

    I emailed him last week and said why am I still got no grade and he returned with "You did not submit any coursework. I believe you claimed that you were working with someone else, but I have no evidence of this" so I scanned the submission form and emailed it to him and I have not heard back.

    I'm annoyed because I did 50% of this as two of the team members fail to turn up (Sem 1 - Yr 1). Another thing is why would I submit someone elses coursework if it's got my signature at the bottom.

    Any advice on this issue please?

  • Does Windows 7 support 16-bit colour depth?

    Hi, I was wondering does Windows 7 support lower colour depths on the monitor than 32-bit. I plan to use 32-bit most of the time but I have the odd game that requires 16-bit colour depth. I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 465 and a Philips 19" Widescreen Monitor connected by DVI.

  • What should I do about a Pay Rise I was promised.?

    Hi I work in a secondary school in the United Kingdom, as an IT Technician I have started on a salary just above the minimum wage. I was promised that when April came I would get a 10% increase and my line manager said two months ago I will go up £2000 and that I have exceeded his expectations. He has seen the bursar and he said to him it would be in my next pay packet after last months.

    I got a letter today and it said I was going up by £100 a year and I am confused being told one thing and then another happens. What should I do?

  • Mobile Phone Signal Problems.?

    Whats the best phone for mobile signals, I work in an office that has poor reception and I use a Motorola V3i and my colleges that have a Nokia N73 and another that has a Sony Ericsson (pda like phone) and they get a enough signal to make and receive calls. All three of us have bought mobile phone signal boosters that stick behind the battery on the phone from eBay. Does anyone recommend any models of phones that would have a powerful antenna. Many thanks.
