  • underground outdoor lumber for New England?

I'm considering partially burying some 2X10 lumber in my front yard for an insulation project with an exterior cement cellar wall. This is because my heating duct is attached directly behind the exterior cement wall and is too expensive to replace with insulating heating duct. We see the melting snow in the winter so we know there is a severe problem. What is the technical information I need to know to make a good decision? I have been looking on the Internet, but I'm not yet knowledgeable enough to know the technical issues involved with outdoor underground lumber so that I can better search for help. For example, should I stain the lumber, or is that a waste of money. I just do not know.

  • How can I properly deactivate a metal fireplace that is built within the walls of a three-story, wooden house?

I have a triangle metal fireplace that came with the house. We have never used it and will never use it. It sits kitty corner within the living room. The drywall runs all around it as it sits behind the drywall on the first story of a three story wooden house. I want to permanently deactivate the fireplace and just surround it with blown insulation that will fill the space between it and the exterior wall. I also want to cap the metal flue that extends from the fireplace on the first floor though the back of drywall on the second floor and into the attic on the third floor. I want to cap the flue at the base of the attic so that the flue area does not freeze the second floor. A) How can I properly blow insulation without violating building codes or is there a better way. B) It is proper to cut the flue in the attic and insulate the flue in the attic to prevent cold air from entering the flue on the second floor behind that drywall as well.

  • What is the name of the supermarket full-length freezer insulated glass?

Last year I installed low-e argon energy-efficient glass in my house for all my windows. This week I was looking at the glass front of the full-length freezers in my supermarket for storing the ice cream etc... The glass in the supermarket freezer was warm to the touch on the outside when the temperature inside the supermarket freezer was below zero. That freezer glass was far more efficient than the "efficient" glass they used for my home windows.

  • My DTV box causes horizontal-hold problems when playing back a newly recorded VCR tape from the DTV box.?

I have my DTV antenna connected to the DTV converter, connected to my analog VCR connected to my analog television all via coax.

Everything works perfectly when watching TV. I then record with the VCR and play it back to test that I can record programs when no one is watching TV. The playback tape is perfect, except for the horizontal hold problems with the playback. This problem is identical with both Digital Stream and Zenith DTV converters. My VCR recorded tapes are still perfect when recording from analog TV stations today. Tech support for both companies did not have an answer. Has anyone seen this issue anywhere?

  • When will we see 8 GB of computer memory with general PC computers?

In 2001, there were 1/2 GBs of computer memory max. available in genrally purchaseable PC computers. Today, in 2008, general PC computers from the major sellers sell 4 GB of computer memory computers. Does anyone have any thoughts on when the motherboard form factor will increase to 8 GB of computer memory?

  • Real live experience with a DTV converter, yet?

Has anyone bought and installed a DTV converter yet? My concern is that with my ability to receive channels even without an antenna on my old TV, the analog and the new DTV signal will cause interference with each other. How will my TV know to ignore the analog signal that is still being broadcast?

  • Convert an electric attic light to an electrical outlet?

I have a hanging, pull-string electrical light in my attic. This is very standard stuff. I would like to purchase an electrical device that will screw into the electric light and give me an electrical outlet.

Think of this as a device with the base of an electric light bulb and an electical outlet instead of the bulb. I thought I saw one in a hardware store 20 years ago, but I have no idea if this product still exists. I can not think of what it would be called with a technical name when searching for one on the Internet.

My business application is to be able to plug equipment into my attic rather than running the cord into the main house.

  • Full-face Respirator?

I have a complex attic that needs a lot of insulation. A five-minute test with a simple dust respirator taught me that I will need a full-face respirator with canisters or filters to deal with hours of time necessary for the insulation.

    a) How do I determine if my head size is large, medium or small before I purchase the respirator? I could not find instructions for measuring my head online.

    b) What is the best type of cartridge for a respirator to be used in an attic? Most of the cartridge types listed are for paint and other air-bourne chemicals, not for fiberglass dust.

    c) Which is more approriate, canisters or filters, or is there a difference?

    Thanks

  • Heating duct insulation?

I live in a partially-cement, three-story house. All the floors and ceilings are 6" of cement and the walls are wood. I have an unheated garage on the first floor with heating duct work attached to the garage cement ceiling with cement nails. This is to support the living room heating needs on the second floor.

I would like to isulate the heating ducts in the unheated garage. What is my best choice or are the options l am listing below even possible?

    a) Hire a contractor to seperate and insulate the heating ducts and then reattach to the cement ceilings with cement nails again.

    b) Find heating duct insulation that can be attached to the existing heating ducts with heavy duty spray-on glue. Does this even exist?

    c) Spray additional insulation on the heating ducts. Is this even possible?

    d) I'm open to any other ideas.

I can find the GPM for the Lowes and Home Depot products, but the listings for the electric water pumps do not also list PSI. These products will list the water height? What water height is equivilent to 50 PSI may be my alternative question?

  • Skylight secondary-glass installation?

We have a single pane, (very inefficient) skylight with both heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. We would like to install a second pane of glass as close to the first pane as possible for more energy efficency here in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. We have been told to contact a local glass manufacturer for residential glass. We have been told that they can sell us dead-light glass or laminated glass. How do we search for a local glass dealer who will work with us. Everything we can think of is not helping us find a list of residential glass companies. Thanks.

  • An electric-based vent for the bathroom exhaust fan ( USA)?

I have been reading all the previous questions about installing a bathroom fan with a vent that only opens when the bathroom fan is running. However, no one giving an answer mentions the name of a specific manufacterer/model number and I can not find a one using Yahoo search. My local versions of the two nationally-known hardware stores are very limited and very unhelpful with this question.

  • Sending a Postcard Around the World?

I was wondering if there is a company (or anyone) who will help you send a postcard around the world. I think it would be cool to send one postcard to different cities on different continents. Each city could postmard the postcard and forward it to the next city until it is returned to me. Then I would have something that had been around the world.

  • Is there inexpensive software available that will monitor my Windows 2000 Internet port?

I'm looking for software that will tell me what processes are using my internet port during a session. If it can tell me more information than that, it would be great.

I will see my Internet port working feverishly while I'm not working and I'm wondering what is using it.

  • Could our understanding of black holes need to be adjusted?

Today, it is thought that a black hole's gravity is too strong for light to escape, but at the same time x-ray radiation does escape from black holes. Given that light is one weaker form of radiation, that seems to be a contradiction of our knowledge of gravity.

Do we need to a adjust our understanding to be that black holes do not produce any light because the high gravity beyond the event horizon has changed the electron vs the nucleous ratio. Light is no longer be produced. It is not that gravity is able to hold it.

X-ray radition is produced from the tremendous energies within the black hole's destruction of each atom's neucleous. That is Einstein. The electrons from these atom's have already been stripped from the atom. The electron's that produce light were stripped at the event horizon. Therefore, no more light production within the black hole.
