  • Is there a best a practice for migrating Windows web servers to Linux?

I'm not finding any literature on it. Surprisingly, I've found plenty of stuff for desktops. Maybe I'm just using the wrong search terms.

  • Are female cats more hypoallergenic than male cats?

There are a lot of sites out there that say various things about the hypoallergenicness of various types of cats. Can anyone point me to actual studies that show any of this, specifically for females being more hypoallergenic than males, but really for any of it.

  • Did the Legos in cereal boxes come with a number we can look up on the Internet?

Also, it would be good to know if there was just a list of Legos that came in cereal boxes or really any information on the Legos that can in cereal boxes.

  • Is it possible to use "think" and "thin" in a patent claim?

Generally the answer is no, because they would render the claim indefinite, but what if the claim looks like this:

    "A beverage foaming apparatus comprising:

a hollow capsule with a wall thickness that varies progressively so that the capsule will have a thick wall region and a thin wall region."

It would seem this would not be indefinite because essentially you're saying that one wall is thicker than the other, but if you just say that, you miss the progressivity, which is why I don't want to do that.

  • What US law says the budget ends on January 15?

I've read that the US budget ends on January 15th, 2014, but I haven't yet figured out what the code is for that. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How do you appeal a NEA decision?

I've poked around arts.gov and haven't been able to find a way to appeal their decisions or anything about how they deal with the APA. I did find some FOIA type stuff. I'm assuming the NEA has some sort of internal appeals board. Going to a federal district court can't really be the first step, can it?

  • Does the actual inventor have any recourse to push the application through?

This is assuming an inventor has assigned patent rights to a company and that the company is now out of business. Those are pretty important assumptions, but I couldn't get them into the question part because not enough characters.

  • Is there a reasonably concise history of government transparency in Asia, Africa or native America?

The history of transparency in the west is well known. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_government#Histo...

Actually, the Wikipedia article doesn't cover transparency aspects in ancient Greece or the middle ages, but sources for that are easily found as well.

What I haven't yet been able to find are resources on the history of transparecy in non-Western cultures. The Chinese has Emperors, so probably not a lot of transparency there. My guess is the native Americans were a transparent bunch as a rule, but I don't really know where to start. I was not a history major as an undergrad!

  • What is the best way to get a high school intern?

Actually, I don't care if the person is in high school or is an octogenarian, I just figure a high school kid would be best suited for the type of work I want done. It doesn't matter where the individual is. All of the work can be done online. However, if a school wants to meet mentors for credit or something, then the cities where we have representatives are Baltimore, MD, Washington, DC and Concord, NH, so the surrounding areas are all game.

I am working on getting a non-profit set up. There are two of us right now (well, there are some other very, very part-time volunteers) and we can't get it all done. I would, of course, tell a school more about what the non-profit does, but right now I am asking a question, not promoting the non-profit!

Here are some specifics I would like to know, but I welcome general thoughts as well:

Is it better to contact schools or boards of education? Would it even make sense to contact the state board of education?

Does it make sense to post to Craigslist? Are there specific sites that kids are using these days. Facebook vs. Twitter, etc.

Again, we are targeting high school age kids that would be interested in gaining some experience in music, technology or law, but we are not age-dependent in any way. If a professional audio engineer wants to start editing out podcasts for us, I am not going to say no!

  • How long does it take to reach the ground when jumping out of an airplane?

This is not a physics problem (I am a law student). Obviously it depends on how high the plane is when they jump. I just want normal circumstances. Bonus points if you can tell me the amount of time if they pass out and allow the emergency shoot to go. If you are curious as to the situation look at CV-94-225-M 02/21/96 Pond v. Majercik US District Court for the District of New Hampshire. Notice the date. This is not a live controversy. I am just trying to get a picture of what is going on in the case. Thanks!

  • How do I use how to use abiword-plugin-grammar?

I have the plugin in question installed and it underlines things it doesn't like in green. However, there does not appear to be a way to tell it that I want it to ignore that grammatical structure in this document. For example, it is highlight stuff in a memo heading. Also, I'd like to be able to set it to check for spaces between sentences. MS Word has this feature. I need the feature because I have always used two spaces between sentences and I am required on this assignment to type one space between sentences. I think it will be difficult to check between every sentence. I suppose I need to start working on this format in emails and such since I will have to deal with it for the next three years.

I am using AbiWord 2.8.6 on Linux Mint 11.

  • What are the requirements for prescribing Schedule II drugs?

Asked another way, are there any requirements that a certain type of doctor is required for any drug prescriptions? For example, if someone needed morphine, would one need to be a anesthesiologist to prescribe? Is an oncologist needed for cancer drugs? Is a psychiatrist needed for psychiatric drugs?

    Some back-story and related questions:

I have been taking a drug for a few years now but I moved and no longer see that physician. Is it ok for a physician that I know to continue to prescribe me that drug? Does it depend on the state? Does it depend on the drug? I didn't spend a ton of time searching on Westlaw and Lexis because it seems to me most of the information is on people trying to sell, which makes sense considering that would be illegal. It doesn't actually matter if it's strictly illegal. If my friend is going to get in any professional trouble, then I need to just get a new doctor here, even if there's otherwise no point.

  • Do online sex toys like sinulator work on Linux?

I am in a long-distance relationship (per us both leaving Wisconsin) and we have been looking into various remote controlled sex toys. However, the ones I have found do not say they support Linux. Does anyone know if these work in WINE? Are there any that have .debs or some other way to install?

  • Where does Outlook store all of its information?

I've been searching GOOG to find out the different places Outlook stores information because of a problem with certified emails. However, I can't seem to find much other than telling me how to send certified emails.

I've seen problems with fingerprint readers (biometrics) trying to go to non-existent LDAP containers but in this case there are no biometrics on the machine.

The users does not have this problem when logging in to other machines with Office 2007, so it seems like a profile issue. We blew away the Outlook profile and rebuilt the OST, but that didn't fix anything.

We could rebuild the entire user profile, but that seems like overkill. Thanks!

  • what are the best "healthy" high heels?

I've read a couple articles on healthy high heels but seeing as how I've never bought a pair of women's shoes I don't know what to get. I want her to wear them so lets say price is not an issue. Lets not get crazy though.

  • What is the Swedish saying for 'go hard or go home'?

The direct translation is 'gå hårt eller gå hem' so that's not what I'm looking for. Do they say that or do they say something else? The Swedes aren't as competitive as Americans, so I'm wondering if phrases like this exist. Even in a very team oriented environment though, there's no reason to suspect giving maximum effort isn't favored.

  • Can I receive MMS if I can only send SMS?

I have AT&T and I got a txt with a picture. It says it can't download it. I have wifi, but I guess it only wants to do data. Is there any way I can get it? They aren't even offering me the opportunity to pay to get it. :(

  • Can I turn off the fan on an nVidia 8400 GS?

I've looked in the BIOS and in the nVidia control panel but I can't figure out a way to simply turn off the fan. Sure, I could unscrew it, but that seems like unnecessary work. I want to turn it off and then run the system stability tools and see if I actually need it running. If I do, I'll turn it back on.

  • Does learning two languages at the same time make it harder to learn one?

I'm trying to learn Swedish and Spanish. I'm being pretty passive with both (changed my computer language to Swedish, watching Spanish television). Am I messing myself up? I'd prefer to learn Swedish. Should I stay away from ESPN Deportes?
