Desktop PC won't boot - power light on but no disk activity?
When I switch on my PC, the power LED on the front of the case lights up but nothing else happens. The fan doesn't spin, I can't hear the hard drive doing anything (it's normally very loud) and the hard drive LED doesn't flash like it usually does. The power LED on the monitor flashes on and off, meaning it thinks the PC is turned off (it should light up solidly) and the screen stays black.
For a while, when it did this, it would work if I turned it off then tried again a few times. Now it doesn't work at all. Any ideas what's wrong with it? Can it be fixed, or am I going to have to get a new one?
2 AnswersDesktops1 decade agoRecurring headaches - pain behind right eye, worse when moving head?
I've tried my best to look stuff up about headaches on the internet but it seems like they can be caused by almost anything. Some days, I wake up with this headache and it won't go away. Painkillers don't seem to make much of a dent, it isn't really a BAD headache it's just persistent. The pain is right behind my right eye, and it's worse if I stand up quickly or shake my head. If I forget and move my head too quickly it feels like I've been stabbed.
Opinions, Yahoo community? Worry/don't worry? See a doctor? Get my eyes checked? I thought it might be migraine but I don't have any weird visual symptoms, just pain.
1 AnswerOther - General Health Care1 decade agoLosing connection to IRC regularly every eight minutes?
I can still browse the internet, download stuff etc just fine, I'm not losing my connection to the internet but mIRC disconnects me every eight minutes. Precisely. It's weird. It just started doing this in the last few days and always reconnects right away but it's bugging me, what could be causing this?
2 AnswersOther - Internet1 decade agoLooking for the title of an old movie - a murderer scarred by bear attack?
A friend of mine remembers this movie as absolutely terrifying him when he was a kid. It'd be a pretty old movie, out by the end of the 60s or early 70s although it could have been earlier. He doesn't remember all of it but it was something about a wagon train travelling west when one of the travellers is mauled by a bear. His companions think he's dead so they bury him and move on. It turns out he's still alive although horribly scarred. He digs himself up and goes and takes revenge on them for leaving him behind. Probably not the kind of movie a kid should have been watching. I'm really curious to find out the title - does anyone recognise it?
1 AnswerMovies1 decade agoImmersion heater shaking house, loud banging noises when turned on?
I am asking on behalf of my mother, who doesn't use Answers. The pilot light on her central heating boiler has gone out, she has a backup immersion heater but it hasn't been used in more than five years. She says when she turned it on, it made the house shake and made loud banging noises so she turned it off again for fear something would explode. The water tank is in the loft right above the room that was shaking.
She thinks it could be air in the water pipes - does this make sense? Is it safe to turn it on? It is very cold and the central heating will not be fixed til Tuesday.
6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade ago401 errors in Firefox 3 on multiple sites, login dialog box no longer appears?
I've been using Firefox 3 for a while and recently started having
a problem with it. In the last few days, when I go to sites that request login details using a JavaScript popup dialog box, instead of showing the "username and password" box like usual it just shows "No credentials or unsuccessful login" straight away. When I hit OK on that box I see the actual login box for a split second, then get a 401 error and can't log in to the site. This is on every site that uses that kind of popup login, rather than a login form on the actual page itself.
I have a ton of extensions and I have 'remember passwords for sites' turned on. I really don't want to reinstall Firefox and start from scratch with everything. Everything else works fine.Where do I start to troubleshoot this?
1 AnswerSoftware1 decade agoWhat is the Burmese word for 'good'?
I need to know the Burmese word for 'good', as in "The dog was being good", or "You are a good person", and how to pronounce it. It's for a story I'm writing, unfortunately I don't speak any Burmese but I need this one word for a plot point. Thanks in advance for your help!
1 AnswerLanguages1 decade agoHow do you spell the name of the devil/demon that sounds like 'Theratis' or 'Theratus'?
Heard it in a list of names and can't work out how to spell it. Can't find it anywhere on Google, and it's not in the biblical list so don't just post that one. It's definitely supposed to mean a devil or demon - other names in the list were Beelzebub, Baalzebul, Mammon, Abaddon, Asmodeus, Satan, Lucifer and the Ancient Enemy.
1 AnswerWords & Wordplay1 decade agoLooking for a certain site - matches skilled students with people who need work doing, like proof reading?
It's driving me mad, I saw the site in the paper yesterday but have completely forgotten the URL. I know it started with 'student' - it was 'student-------.co.uk' but I can't work out what word goes in the gap. I've been guessing things but to no avail. Does anyone know the site I mean? It's supposed to help students earn extra cash by doing odd jobs, all organised online...
1 AnswerOther - Internet1 decade agoGoing to Laser Quest for the first time - any tips?
I'm going with a group and I think I'm the only one who's never been before. I'm gonna get schooled! I already know not to wear white - anyone got any other tips?
Also, how dark is it really? Can you at least see where you're going?
1 AnswerOther - Games & Recreation1 decade agoHow can I make 'Cancel' the default on a Visual Basic msgbox?
I'm using Visual Basic 6, and I have an 'OK/Cancel' msgbox that asks the user whether they want to overwrite a file. Obviously, it'd be nice if this popped up with 'Cancel' selected automatically rather than 'OK' - currently, just pressing Enter when it pops up hits 'OK' and destroys the file! Is there any way I can do this within the msgbox code, or am I going to have to build a form to replace the msgbox?
5 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoWhat do you think when you hear the phrase "Assume Nothing"?
I'm thinking of using "Assume Nothing" as a slogan, but I need to know if it has any negative connotations I don't know about. Heard it before? What do you think it means? Give me your thoughts!
6 AnswersWords & Wordplay1 decade ago'Connection timeout' errors in Firefox?
For the last couple of days I've been getting a lot of connection timeouts in Firefox. I'm connected to a university network so I basically have no control over it - just an ethernet cable into a wall socket. Is there anything that could be causing this at my end or do I just have to put up with it?
7 AnswersComputer Networking1 decade agoWhy do I see characters in this page?
Looking at http://catb.org/jargon/html/U/ubergeek.html and many other pages on that site, I see a lot of characters where there should be accented letters - for example, I see "often spelled with initial ;" on that page, which I'm pretty sure should be a U with an umlaut. Is this a problem with the site itself, or am I missing a font?
5 AnswersOther - Internet1 decade agoPlaying Audiosurf, logged in but I see no leaderboards?
I created an account, logged in and have been playing popular songs (including Still Alive, which is constantly on the popular songs list) but when I complete a song and it goes to the high scores, there's nothing there. No names or times or anything. How do I fix this?
2 AnswersVideo & Online Games1 decade agoShould I buy more RAM? (Laptop specs inside.)?
I have an HP Pavilion G5056EA. 1.73 GHz Pentium dual core, 120 GB hard drive, 1 GB RAM, Intel 943ML graphics chipset with "up to 128MB shared memory", running (here's the horrible part) Vista Home Premium. I got this because my old laptop (which was XP) died and my insurance company paid for a new one, but it came with Vista. I can't afford to change to XP.
I have the theme set to Windows Classic, which is a bit better than Aero, but I still find that games run pretty badly. I have to turn the graphics down to get decent speed out of them. Thing is, I don't know whether more RAM would make any real difference given that I don't have a decent graphics card.
So, basically: Buy more RAM Y/N?
7 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoWhy would someone trapped in the snow blindfold himself?
In this clip from The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert is stranded in a blizzard in Maine. He has been getting steadily more hypothermic through the course of the episode, and is now delirious.
What I don't understand is, why is he blindfolded? This appears for the first time in this clip and is never explained.
6 AnswersFirst Aid1 decade agoLooking for a certain Firefox extension - just start typing to search the page you're on?
On my old PC, I had a Firefox extension that allowed you to just start typing a word (without pressing Ctrl+F or anything) and so long as you didn't have a text box selected, it would search the page you were viewing. Now I'm trying to recreate my setup on my new PC and I can't remember the name of the extension. I'd really got used to it - anyone know its name, or where I can find it to re-download?
1 AnswerSoftware1 decade agoHP laptop won't run off battery - why?
I have a brand new HP Pavilion G5056EA laptop which has weird battery issues. When running off AC power, after it's been plugged in for a long time and it appears that the battery is fully charged (system tray icon shows 100% power) if I unplug the AC adaptor, the laptop powers down and will not power up until it is plugged back in. When it is then plugged in and turned back on, it appears the battery is totally empty and it will charge back up. If unplugged DURING this charging period, say at 50%, it behaves normally (runs off battery, battery level drops gradually) but if unplugged after it's been showing 'fully charged' for a while, it is as if there was no charge in the battery at all and it instantly powers down as before. What's going on here?
2 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoiPod Touch won't connect to Belkin router with WEP - I know the password is right!?
I have a Belkin 'ADSL modem with Wireless-G router'. It uses 64-bit WEP security with a hex key (looks like 7A26BD4C2F). I have three laptops all connected to this router and they work fine with the key, so I know it's right.
My iPod Touch detects the network but when I click on the SSID and enter the key I get a 'unable to connect to network' message.
If I go into the router and disable WEP security, then the iPod connects to the network perfectly and I can browse the internet. But not with WEP turned on.
I have tried using 'Other' in Wi-Fi Networks on the iPod, entering the SSID, selecting WEP manually and entering the key, but the same thing happens.
I have rebooted the router, changed the WEP key, changed it back, reset the iPod and even restored the iPod to factory settings, but the problem persists. It's as if I'm entering the wrong key, but I know it's right because I have the router settings right in front of me.
Anyone encountered this problem? Idea
