Is it okay to delete power steering?
On a car designed with power steering (using the standard hydraulics and pump rather than electric motor assist), is it bad to remove the power steering system altogether? I've heard before that the rack and pinion requires the power steering fluid for lubricant; someone even said that it can seize up mid-turn without this lubrication. I'm not so sure I believe that part, but does the steering system indeed require this fluid for lubricant? I know this would make it harder to turn... I'm not THAT misinformed lol.
18 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs7 months agoAutomatic paddle shift rev match kit?
Does anyone make these? Some high performance cars with automatic trannies will blip the throttle and match revs on an automatic transmission downshift. Seems like it also might wait a little during upshifts for a synchronous shifts. Are there any aftermarket kits that can do this? It would be on a ZF 6 speed automatic with shiftronic. The car has paddle shifters and the throttle body is no doubt electronically actuated, so this makes me think the infrastructure is there. Has anyone done something like this?

This is to say, without something as exotic as a sealed space suit, but as many layers of ordinary cold weather clothing as necessary. Is there any practical limit at which humans cannot reasonably function, no matter how many layers/insulation is worn?

6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 year agoAre cheap Chinese engine kits any good?
I blew my engine on my bike (96 Suzuki Dr200) from what I believe was all the oil leaking out on the highway and subsequent failure (sounds like it spun a bearing or dropped a valve). Anyway, its locked up and nonfunctional now and I need to rebuild it. Parts are so obscure for it though that the cheapest (and sometimes only) available parts I can find are brand new extremely cheap (65 bucks) kits consisting of the piston, rings, gaskets, block, etc. Have any of you had experience with these? I don't want to use it if I have a choice, but I may not.
8 AnswersMotorcycles1 year agoHow does new car sales tax work?
Online, a listed new car will say in the description how basically the price isn t legitimate and there are a slew of fees. One of these is the state sales tax. If buying from out of state, does this sales tax need to be paid? If so, is it paid to the state where the buyer lives or the dealership is located? I m simply trying to discern which of the additional fees are bull feces (and can thus be circumvented) and which are legitimate.

7 AnswersZoology2 years agoAre plastic 5 gallon gas tanks suitable for use in vehicles as the main tank?
I believe they have a ventilation system, correct? or am I wrong... So as long as the pressure is zero in the tank and air can come in when fuel goes out it should be fine. Do modern plastic gas cans (just average ones in the stores) have this pressure equalization mechanism built in the cap?

At TDC maximum compression with the engine off, how long should the air stay pressurized in a good running engine before escaping? I can hear the air coming out in about a second or so.

Where to find very cheap (I’m talking couple hundred) paragliders? Does such a thing exist? I bought a speedflyer wing (ozone xt16) with a harness for 173 bucks and a gift card to subway, was wondering if there’s anything comparable to this for paragliding wings?
3 AnswersOther - Sports2 years agoMilitary funded college question?
Let's suppose someone is enrolled in college. A good public university, but not affiliated with the military (such as University of Virginia, for example). Is it possible to sign a contract with the military promising (for example) 4 years of service on the condition that they pay for your college while you finish it off first? The biggest questions here are if they will let you finish college (paid for and all) before working in the military, and if this can happen with any public university rather than special military schools. For the intentions of this question, is it possible specifically to do this with the Air Force?

1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs2 years agoCV axle won t go all the way in?
To clarify, the car is a 1985 Camry. The axle split apart in the center while driving at speed, and in doing the portion of the shaft that fits inside of the transmission popped out about an inch and a half. It is still connected to the transmission and spins with the gears, but has broken the seal with the transmission because it will not go in all the way. People have told me that this is due to a c ring, but on this cv axle there is no c ring, nor any groove in the axle where one should be (and this is the original axle as well). Yes, I know what the c ring is supposed to look like. I just changed a cv axle on my 93 corolla the other day. No, there is definitely no c ring or place where the ring should be. I have tried forcing the axle into the transmission with a mallet, a sledgehammer, and compressing it into place with a jack but it does not budge. It makes a solid clunk as it slides in, but will not go in the extra inch and a half or so. What could this be, and how to fix? Anyone have experience with an axle like this? Bad idea to cut off the end of the spline so it fits?
3 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs2 years agoCV axle won’t go all the way in?
My cv axle broke apart today while driving, has happened before no big deal. The axle on this (85 Camry) are split into 2 separable pieces, one of which goes to the wheel and the other inside the transmission. When it broke off, the part of the axle that goes to the transmission came about an inch and a half out while remaining inside and meshed with the transmission, allowing the tranny fluid to leak out. This part has never happened before, the other 2 times this part of the axle stayed in place. I can’t get it the extra inch and a half in to seal with the transmission, even after attempting to beat it into place with a sledgehammer and attempting to press it in with a jack (must have been at least 800 pounds of force, to no avail. I took out the axle and examined the splines, they’re not blocked or warped or anything and there is no pin or hole where a pin should be on this axle. It slid right back into place and engaged the transmission, except the extra 1.5 inches needed to be snug. I can’t drive it like this because the axle won’t connect properly and the transmission fluid will spray everywhere. How to get it in?
