Can you park your car on city streets?
This is specifically for Charlottesville Virginia though I imagine the principle applies generally for most areas in the US. Are you allowed to park your car on a public street in front of someone s house (that you don t own) indefinitely? Provided there aren t no parking signs and the road is a public road.

In California, yes.
In most towns in New Jersey, you cannot park overnight on a public street, even in front of your own house.
The principle that applies everywhere is that you can do on a public street in front of someone else's house (that you don't own) everything that you can do on a public street in front of your house (that you do own).
The exception is if you are the President. For security reasons, the general public is not allowed to park in front of the White House or Trump Tower. But there are sign in front of Trump Tower.

All parting regulations are LOCAL. They are not even uniform throughout a given city.
As a general rule, you can't park on streets outside of residential areas except in MARKED parting spaces which often have meters so you pay by the minute to park.
In residential areas, it isn't uncommon for street parking to be limited to residents and require a permit.
In nearly ALL cases, the car must be legal to drive on public streets to legally be parked on them.
As others have stated, an otherwise legally park car can be considered abandoned if not moved for a period of time. Abandoned vehicles can be towed at the owners expense.

There are plenty of private parking lots in downtown Charlottesville where you can pay a monthly fee to park your car. Wouldn't that be a better option?

Where I live you can leave a car for three days only and then you have to move, so you can park every day as long as you move. That is to stop people abandoning cars. Chek the local parking laws in your area.

Laws vary. In a neighborhood a few blocks from me, you need a valid parking permit to park on the street. In my neighborhood you don't. If a car has been parked in front of a house for an extended period of time, it can be reported to the police as abandoned or stolen, and they'll tow it. In other places it has to be ticketed before it can be towed. You'd need to look up relevant laws for a particular area. I do know that in downtown Cherlottesville, particularly near the university, they seem to have permit parking (based upon trying to find a parking spot while shopping in the area).

Generally in cities you need to apply for a street parking permit. You need to be a resident of that street or neighborhood. They usually send you a decal or hang tag to display on your windshield so they know you have a permit. Most streets have parking time limits otherwise, with some streets, or just one side of a street, designated as residential parking only for permit-holders. I don't know about Charlottesville though because it's not a huge city, but they do seem to require permits for certain areas.

Not in my town. Not even in front of a house you own. My neighbors had a car that their son had been driving, but it was in an accident. They parked it in front of their house and left it there. After a while, they got a notice from the city that the car had to be moved. You can't abandon a car anywhere.
