  • Bicycle front chain set?

Would anyone know if the front sprockets on the chain wheels are meant to have few of the 'teeth' slightly shorter? Someone mentioned these are the changing points for the gears. Would this be correct?

Reason I am asking is on a new chain set after a couple of weeks cycling the large wheel had few teeth worn out and looked much smaller than the others. I reckon it's not supposed to be like this, but the mechanic at the shop said it's normal as these are the changing points. I doubt it really as it was not 1-2 only but a few random and I was thinking after few months the sprocket will need changing again, especially if I use it only 30% of the time.

  • Could this gift to a baby be considered offensive?

It might be a weird question and I hope I don't offend anyone by it, but would appreciate an opinion.

A black colleague at work just had a newborn baby and we decided in the team to get something for the baby and include a cuddly soft toy, which is a cute brown monkey. Would this be OK, or would it be taken as a racial connotation? It is weird indeed, but few years ago, I witnessed when a black girl got very offended in a conversation where some of her actions were compared to a monkey (Note: not her, her actions) and this escalated to a full blown racial argument. This incident has stuck in my mind and always makes me think. It's crazy indeed, and I hope I am wrong to think that way, but if you could share your opinion, would be great. I would prefer to make the couple who have the baby happy with the gift, rather than offended by it.

    Thank you

  • 6 months probation and termination of contract during probation without written notice?

If a company employs someone on a permanent position with a 6 months probation, but then decides not to extend the probation to permanent and let the employee go (no misconduct or bad performance), are they supposed to present the employee with a written notice and reasons for this?

if they have not provided the employee with any written notice, just verbally notified the employee in a formal meeting but no documents have been signed, what rights does the employee has for seeking legal action?

initially the contract states that during probation either party the company or the employee can terminate the contract at any time giving only one week notice.

    any ideas would be appreciated

  • Dropped external hard drive - can data be restored?

Hi, I've accidently droped my WD 500GB USB external hard drive and since then cannot read anything. It will eventually show up in Explorer after 10 tries to reconnect, but won't read absolutely nothing.

I was wondering if there is a way of taking it out of the casing and connect it differently and try to read it?

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Please advise if you can.

    Thank you

  • Egypt - cost of essential stuff? UK debit/credit cards accepted?

Would anyone be able to advise what budget I should allocate for a week holiday in Sharm-el-Sheikh with a planned visit to Cairo (possibly by bus)? The flight and B&B hotel has been booked already. Just need to roughly know how much I would need to spend for evening meals in normal places or little supermarket purchases.

Are UK debit/credit cards accepted in stores or cash points?

    Would appreciate your kind advice.

  • can you use one TV external antenna for multiple TV sets?

We have one antenna on the roof, but it is only connected to my flat mate's TV in his room.

I have an internal antenna which is OK, but not great with a Freeview, even though it's a signal amplifying still can't get some channels like Channel 5 for example...

Anyway, i was wondering if there is a way of splitting the cable from the external antenna to extend it to my TV set. Would this be possible?

Or any other ideas, please advise.

    Thanks

  • how to report a scam letter for advertising?

We received an Invoice for about £70 with some details that our company is advertised on certain directory. The invoice form looks so fake, it hasn't got a number for their accounts department, neither a contact number for the main office, nor a registration number of the company.

I tryied to google the company and the directory online and it looks exactly what I thought a scam set up thing, which in my opinion, if they sent Invoices to as many UK businesses, somewhere they might get a check back from companies who woudn't spot the scam. I hope I am wrong, because scams like these can be easy to get away unnoticed.

If anyone could advise me where I can report such a scam, please tell me, I looked on the London Met Police, but it is more for a serious crimes.

  • Reading in the toilets at work?

How many of you, men or women at work admit to take a news paper, magazine or a book to the loo and spend a good 10 min or more sitting and reading while waiting for No.2?

For those who don't read in the WC, how do you feel, if you ever notice someone from the office heading towards the loo with a reading material?

Do you think to yourself that the person is so going for a long...No.2 or you just not bother even thinking about it?

(yep, i'm weird, but sometimes silly things like this spring to mind) :)

  • ZIP code origins and use?

I just read a question and an answer regarding postcodes (ZIP in the US)...

One of the people answering the question was refering to the English as 'silly' people because most people replied that it is about postcode. Why silly? Postcode is the right word, deal with it.

If in the States the mail delivery system was invented to call the postcode a ZIP code, which stands for zone improvement plan...(or whatever) then it is only applicable to the American system. In all the rest of the world is most commonly knows as a postcode...
