I'm a stay-at-home mother of six children--four boys and two girls. I'm a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have a bachelor's degree in education and several years of teaching experience in the public schools prior to becoming a mom. I see the world in black and white, right and wrong.

  • I teach preschool and this is the first time I've had a student who cannot hold or utilize scissors.?

She holds them in a way that makes it difficult to cut and when I try to get her to change her grip, she gets frustrated and gives up. Any ideas on how to help her learn to cut better?

  • Why is there such a negative stigma on adoption but not on teen pregnancy?

In almost every question on here, anybody who is for adoption seems to get tons of thumbs down, yet abortion and even teen pregnancy don't. Abortion is seen as a woman's right to her body and teen pregnancy is seen as the same, and also an accident. But adoption seems to be a big no-no. I just don't understand why there is a negative stigma on adoption. When will people realize that it's a loving sacrifice to ensure that a baby you can't take proper care of has parents who can take care of him/her?

  • SAHM's: What do you do when you get summoned for jury duty?

This is the second time in the last two years that I've been summoned. I responded that I stayed home, didn't have any access to childcare, and I have six kids, one of them a nursing newborn. They merely postponed it to October. At which point, I will still have a nursing baby. Not only that, but why am I getting summoned for the second time in just two years? The last time I was summoned I had a nursing newborn then too.

  • Has anyone ever had a sibling go through a divorce, but you still stayed in touch with the sibling's ex?

My brother and his wife are splitting up, and I'm very distraught over it. My sister-in-law has been like a sister to me for 16 years and I can't imagine her not being at family events and things. I know that the relationship will change and I'm heartbroken. I'm heartbroken for them and what they're going through and for their six kids, but I am grieving over our relationship as well. How could it not change? Is it possible to remain close friends with her no longer married to my brother?

  • Best baby wrap, sling, carrier?

    Moby wrap?

    Ergo carrier?

    Zolowear?

    Maya sling?

    Others?

Have you used one of these? Did you like it? Would you recommend it? Have you used more than one? how did they compare?

I have five kids and a newborn and need to be able to use my hands but my little one only wants to be held 100% of the time and that's just not doable with five other kids. I have a Snugli carrier but it hurts my back so I'm looking for something more comfortable for me and baby. Plus, I don't want to spend a lot of money as this is my last child. I'm actually looking for a used one online and these are some that I've come across.

    Thanks!

  • What do you think of the new thumbs up/thumbs down on YA?

I personally think that one of the options on thumbs down should be "I disagree" just like one of the options on the thumbs up is "I agree". Since sometimes answers are personal opinions, especially in sections like Religion and here in Parenting--there aren't necessarily wrong or right answers or answers based on fact every time.

  • Did you ever push the doctor's hand away when checking your cervix during pregnancy because it hurt so bad?

Doctor was checking me today and it hurt so bad that my reflex action was to push her hand away. I didn't mean to, but I couldn't help it, the pain was bad! Ever happen to you?

  • Why (besides the alternator/battery) would a car just die while you're driving it?

I replaced the alternator in July 2012 and the battery less than a month later. Today, my car died as I was pulling into my driveway. It started right up again. It's the second time that has happened in five months, last time was back in November and it was the same thing--it died as I was turning into my driveway.

  • Is it annoying to anyone else how much gas prices keep rising on a weekly basis?

We filled up last week at 3.09/gal and this week at 3.27/gal. That's a 5% increase in ONE week. This time last month (at least here where we are in the intermountain west), gas prices were at $2.50/gal (granted, only for about two days). That's a 30% increase in one month. I get prices fluctuating and inflation too, but this is ridiculous.

  • Anyone else's spouse totally blow off Valentine's Day?

  • Mirena: If you have used this method of birth control, can you please tell me your experience?

I'm trying to decide what birth control to use after I have my baby. I've used the pill most of the time in the past, but I don't want to use it anymore and we don't particularly care for condoms. I'm also not sure if we're done, so we don't want to do anything permanent YET. But after reading the pamphlet my doctor gave me on Mirena, I'm kind of scared of it. It sounds like there are way too many possibilities of complications and risks, plus the whole idea that the first SIX months, I could have irregular bleeding and cramping and all that does not sound like what I want.

So can anybody share with me their experience with it and if they would recommend it?

    Thanks.

  • Dividng walls/collapsible walls?

I was watching a TV show once, not Extreme Home Makeover, but something where they were showing do-it-yourself projects on a tight budget and one thing they did was add some walls to divide a kids room into two rooms. The walls they used were some sort of temporary wall-like they didn't build a full on wall--the wall could be removed--but it looked like a regular wall. Does anyone know what these are called and where to find them?

  • Parents, when you see another child at your child's school or daycare who is wearing?

worn out clothes or shoes, do you automatically assume that the parents are too poor to buy them new stuff? Do you say something to the parents or just mind your own business?

  • How many more years will it be before the U.S. Government just gets rid of Thanksgiving altogether?

Already this year Black Friday is beginning on Thanksgiving Day for a lot of retailers. Plus, since the country is moving more towards Atheism, the whole premise on which Thanksgiving is founded was that the Pilgrims were thankful to God for their bounteous blessings. So when will the U.S. do away with it?

  • Why do so many parents think their kids have no feelings?

I just posted on FB how disappointed my son was that his dad had to miss his birthday for a business trip and how I just found out he will also have to miss our daughter's birthday in December for another trip and everybody was saying that "kids are resilient and they don't really care about that stuff unless you, the adult, cares." I find that offensive, that so many parents (these people are parents of 2, 4, and 5 kids!) think their kids don't have their own genuine feelings.

  • Parents of school-age children, here's a situation...?

Our school had a school-wide fun run on Friday. My friend's 5-year-old (kindergarten) daughter couldn't find her teacher at the end of the fun run, which happened to be at the very end of the school day. The teacher also seemed to have confusion about where she was supposed to pick up her class. So the daughter sat down on the playground and cried until someone found her. She was paged over the loudspeaker 2-3 times but stayed put, crying on the playground. My friend is irate with the school over this and demanded to see the principal and have a letter read to the PTA and teachers about the situation.

My son is the same age. He has a different teacher. His teacher gathered up the class after the fun run and took them to the front where they get picked up. Not one child was confused. Not one child was left behind.

Now, who's at fault? The PTA who was in charge of the fun run? The principal? The entire school? The child who was not resourceful enough to realize that her name was being called over the loudspeaker?

I asked my kindergarten age son what he would do if he couldn't find his teacher on the big school field and there were lots of students around at the end of the school day, and without hesitation, he said he'd go to the office and have them call for his teacher or his mom.

Is it this parent's fault because she did not teach her daughter any resourcefulness? I'm just curious as to what people think.
