I am a student in Hawaii. I am White, Chinese and Jamaican. I was raised in a Mormon family, but I do not identify with any one religion. I am very spiritual, but not religious. I am a product of my environment. I am a dynamic character in the story of life, always changing from my daily experiences.

  • Religious people, what does your religion say about "Hell" and do you believe it?

What does your religion teach about Hell? Like what is it, who goes there, is there any way out?

And how much of you that do you believe is true? Why?

  • What personally motivates you?

I have plenty good reasons to be motivated, I do what I should, but I feel like I drag myself through life everyday. I have rare moments of ambition and motivation, but mostly I'm going through the motions. Where do you find your motivation?

  • Does anyone else see similarities between Islam and Mormonism?

This is in no way a knock at either religion, I ask this with full respect to believers of both faiths.

I want to know if anyone else thinks the two are very similar in the way in which they became restored truths. Joseph Smith and Muhammad were both young boys of humble origins that wanted to know the truth. Both were visited by an angel and given the restored gospel. Those gospels share many of the same ideas. Both have been misunderstood, by both believers and nonbelievers. Mormonism just happens to be much younger.

*Mormonism is the easiest way to call it and most recognizable way to say it. I know LDS church is preferred, and "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" is the actual name :)

  • **** Can I have your input on my poem (what you think of it and how to improve)? Please?

Help me improve this haiku, if you think it can be made better. It is a romantic poem, which deviates from the standard topics of haiku, but haiku actually originated from the tanka which were love poems. a man would write a haiku to a woman, and she would finish it with a 7-7 syllable couplet. After a while, the art of writing a good intro to a tanka became an individual style of poetry itself, hence the form of haiku we know.

Thanks in advance for your input! Please add your own haiku or short poem if you would like! I would like to see them :)

  • Would conservative media and Fox News be more reliable if there was another mainstream conservative network?

Although I am on the left for most issues, I see very good reason behind the opposing ideas on the right side (except when it comes to some social issues). There are many great debates to be had that could stimulate creative solutions. If conservative ideas have great rational support, why then do they have to be devalued through the delusions and fear tactics of Fox News and absurd radio stations? If there was another conservative network and media outlet for conservatives, would the competition force Fox News and Republicans to tone down the propaganda? The free market, which Republicans claim to hold sacred, thrives on competition. Why is this not the case with their media?

I believe that if there was just MSNBC for liberal media, then MSNBC would go from being biased (which I will admit it is, even though I am liberal) to being just as absurdly biased as fox! The presence of several liberal networks forces journalists to compete for the average moderate American viewers. Would a second Fox do the same? Or would it just double the potential for "Fox News junkies"?

  • What does the word "god" mean to you? What about the word "family"?

All opinions welcome! Please be respectful! I want to know what the words "god" and "family" mean to you. Words are not precise and allow for lots of variation in interpretation.

For example, a much less touchy word like "boat" can have many meanings. You may think of a little canoe you own and take on a river or you may think of a huge ship like the Titanic. Neither interpretation is wrong, because the very nature of language allows for this variability.

So what do "family" and "god" mean to YOU?

Please do not bash other people's beliefs. You can point fingers and call BS on someone trying to force their beliefs on you, but you can not have success convincing someone not believe what they believe if that it is the root of their entire belief system. You may think the person you are trying to change is crazy for being stubborn, but i think it is just as mad and stubborn to try to convince a schizophrenic (just an extreme example) that the world they see is not real.

  • Will the US Congress let Puerto Rico be a state?

Every US territory that has been eligible and voted to become a state has been made a state. However, they have all had enough to offer to national interests as states. I see Puerto Rico like Hawaii; they have much less money than mainland states. However, Hawaii's worth to the military made statehood worth it (which is why it was basically stolen when it became a US territory). The Puerto Rico vote is sketchy and creates questions. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was a 2 part question - the first question was something like "should we change our current status as a territory?" which passed with flying colors. part two was something like "If yes to part 1, should we become a state, independent, or slightly change the way we are a territory?" which got much more mixed feedback.

Can anyone shed some light on the actual way it went done and will move forward?

Will money keep Congress from making it a state? Will racism? Will congress's childish incompetence to do ANYTHING?

  • Would you say that atheism requires faith?

I think that atheists that mock the faith of religious people are kind of funny (not all atheists, just the ones who like to throw it in people's faces). Even which all the advances in science, we still know that there is so much we don't know.

The physics models are always changing and are held to be true simply because the serve as adequate fits to our equations. For example, no one has ever seen a proton or electron. We observe their effects, but not with our senses. Their is no way of proving God, but their is no way of proving no God. Doesn't it take faith to claim with conviction that there is no God or higher power?

Agnosticism is very noncommittal, but very realist. I understand people doubting religion or spirituality. I respect people that still admit that, despite their doubts, that we are still humans (smart monkeys lol) and that we are wrong all the time.

  • Christians: Why do you assume atheists are nihilists?

I am generalizing, of course, but why is this so common? Why does the absence of God mean the absence of morals? Is that more revealing about the morality of atheists or religious zealots?

  • "God has no religion"?

What do you personally think about this Gandhi quote? I think it is deeper, but along the same lines as Bob Marley's advocacy for "One Love". I think it is pure gold, whether or not God is real.

Or is it as futile as trying to convert people to your religious beliefs over the internet? :P

  • Who is your favorite Beatle and why?

My favorite is George - the quiet Beatle :) - because he wasn't about drama and was a cohesive force, but was still talented. "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something" were fantastic

  • Book Recommendations?

Some of my favorite books are To Kill a Mockingbird, Hamlet, Ceremony, 1984, Siddhartha, and LOTR. I like classics, but I just finished reading The Dream of the Red Chamber, so I'm looking for something that is a classic, but light enough to enjoy without too much effort. Any suggestions? Thanks!
