  • What does 'straw man'/'man of straw' mean?

Somebody told me the word 'straw man'/'man of straw' means something to the effect of either:

    A) a person who holds the common man's opinion

    B) such an opinion

The term is probably derogatory in nature.

I've tried searching for this particular definition and the closest thing I came across was "A person of weak characters", which I don't believe is the same as either (A) or (B).

My question is, has anyone either heard of or used the word as it is defined in (A) or (B)?

  • What is the word I'm looking for?

I read this expression or a word a while ago on wikipedia, describing a person who pays so much attention to detail (with reference to academics, most likely), to the point that it's irritating to his colleagues. The word either describes a person who does that, or the tendency do that.

I read the definition, and thought it perfectly describes a group mate of mine. I think it might've been a latin word.

Any ideas what that word is? Thanks.

  • Dexter Morgan (Dexter) vs Red John (The Mentalist)?

Which of the two is the better serial killer, and if their paths ever crossed, who do you expect to come out on top?

  • A moral dilemma regarding cage fighting (Mixed Martial Arts)?

I'm writing an essay on cage fighting and I have to discuss the ethics of cage fighting.

Let's say there's an opponent of sanctioned cage fighting who argues that it should be banned because it is "immoral" as people fight "with the intention of hurting each other"...

To which a proponent of cage fighting replies "Because cage fighting involves two consenting adults fighting, your view of morality is irrelevant as it is not shared by either of the party involved. PLUS, they don't really have any malicious intent, so the premise of your argument is false."

Do you think it's a reasonable rebuttal from the proponent of cage fighting? Would it be okay to ban cage fighting even if the combatants involve are perfectly fine with violence?

    Thanks.

  • Brock Lesnar had been fighting at 60% capacity: Hyperbole or fact?

    Hey all,

Dana White apparently passed a statement that Brock Lesnar had been fighting at 60% capacity for the last year.

I'm curious, is that backed by any medical facts whatsoever, or is he just hyping to sell more tickets the next time he fights? Surely if a guy loses 40% of his operating capacity he would notice. I don't think Brock had a clue he was sick.

    So what do you think?

Bonus Question: Brock Lesnar vs Bobby Lashley, who do you think would win?

  • Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin: Why does Brock look bigger?

    Hey all,

I had a question regarding those two. I know their match has been postponed, and that Brock is very ill, but just treat it as a hypothetical comparison.

Everybody's saying they're nearly the same size, how Brock isn't going to have his weight advantage against him. Carwin is 259.5 lbs, whereas Brock is supposed to be around 265.

But when you see them Carwin looks like a shrunk version of Brock. He just looks smaller to me. Can someone clear up whether my stats or observation is wrong? Thanks

  • Gina Carano and Cyborg vs. Brock Lesnar?

Okay, this is an unusual match-up. Brock Lesnar takes on both Gina Carano and Cyborg simultaneously, what in WWE would be known as a 'handicap match'. Can these two rocks crack the boulder?

  • Who can beat Brock Lesnar? Read first!?

I've got my money on Carwin in UFC 106, but I can't help but wonder: What if he doesn't do that? Who would beat Brock then?

Fedor is supposed to be the best MMA fighter at the moment, but he won't be fighting Brock anytime soon it seems. So again, who can humble the Big Bad Brock/Brock "The C0ck" Lesnar? lol

I'd appreciate if you back up your statements with some stats or records etc.

  • Who do you think is the most powerful fictional villain ever?

You may suggest any character you know.

  • The decline of Anime?

    Hello guys,

Recently I an article somewhere (probably IGN) that outlined the fall in sales of the anime industry. Although popular anime series are still turning into a lot of profit, the overall performance was on a downfall last year. This, I guess, is evident in the bankruptcy of Geneon USA, which was once one of the largest distributors of anime in US.

I personally have also felt that Japan just isn't producing more interesting stuff, and although I realize that I don't represent the whole customer community, it's very evident that the standard of anime is falling compared to their works in the past.

My question is, how far do you think it is true? Has anime passed the period of its prime? I would like you to back your statements with statistics, if available.

  • Batman vs Superman: Who do you like more and why, and who do you think is the greatest superhero ever?

Part 1: Which of these two iconic characters from the DC Universe do you like the more? The Dark Knight or The Man Of Steel? What are your reasons for your choice, aside from preference.

Part 2: Who do you think is the greatest superhero of all time?

I'm positive most of the people would choose between these two (Well actually, I think Batman will get 70% of the votes), but you may just say who you think is the best. It may include ANY superhero, from e.g Marvel, or anywhere!

Now keep this in mind before answering: I like Batman more than Superman, he's more interesting to me and my favorite character, but I put Superman over him as the greatest character ever conceived, because 1) He's was the first superhero, 2) He is an icon, the ultimate good guy etc. I'm not asking who you like the most, I'm asking who you think is the greatest (I guess, however, that the answer to both these questions would be the same in most cases).

  • Japanese Animation/Anime vs. American Animation, which do you like more and why?

Question is simple: What do you prefer, Anime or Cartoons (Or American Animation in general), and why?

If you can, please try to include a comparison like commenting on animation, storylines, art style or whatever you think necessary that one form of animation offers and the other doesn't.

Notice that the question includes ALL forms of both Japanese Animation and American Animation, both 2D and 3D.

Also, bear in mind that American animation doesn't stop at Powerpuff Girls, but also includes Samurai Jack, Batman TAS, and epics from Disney such as The Lion King.

  • American Comics vs. Japanese Manga? Which do you like more and why, who would win if they clashed?

Part 1: Which from of entertainment do you prefer and why?

Please include comparisons and mention elements that you think the other medium lacks, if you can.

Part 2: Who would win if the Comics-verse and Manga-verse collided in a hypothetical battle against each other?

You are just to use the characters you are aware of, or may look up some of those really powerful famous characters like Goku, Hulk etc.
