  • How come it took 3 years for my answer to be chosen as best answer?

Every now and then I get an email that one of my Yahoo! Answers was chosen as Best Answer. Sometimes it's an answer I posted 2-3 years ago. Why the looooong delay?

  • Why are legislators so reluctant to impose a "sin tax" junk food like they did on cigarettes?

Soda, candy, chips, McDonald's - So many things lead to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and a host of other major health issues that jam up our health care system. Yet only smokers are targeted for grossly unfair taxes, while many non-smokers are free to slowly kill themselves with junk food that is not highly taxed. Smokers are the victims of addiction, and that addiction is being exploited by lawmakers to increase tax revenues. Junk food is not addictive. People who don't want to pay the higher taxes could simply choose healthier options. High taxes on junk food would lead to better heath, overall, in America, and would lead to lower healthcare costs. So why are smokers bearing this burden alone?

  • Why did Yahoo Movies change my review of "Paranormal Activity" from a C+ to an A+?

I wrote a review of this movie, which I found to be way overhyped and average at best, so I gave it a C+. After previewing and approving my review, the letter grade I gave it was bumped up to A+. What gives? How worthwhile is a movie review site with the wrong grades?

  • My Wii gets stuck on the Health & Safety Warning screen and won't allow me to access anything else. Why?

It used to be that when I started the Wii, I got that screen with a Press A option. Now I don't get that option. I tried resetting, unplugging, removing the battery, and replacing the batteries in the remotes. I tried the Wii Sports DVD, as well as a few others. Same problem no matter what I do. Is this Wii toast? If it needs repair, how much can I expect that to cost? I bought it used in October - no more warranty. Worked great until recently. So sad.

  • Why do so many movies aimed at adolescent and early-20s males feature full-frontal male nudity?

The "Jackass" movies, "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story", "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay", and now "The Hangover". Even so-called date movies like "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" feature the wang. What's up with that? When I was the age these movies are targeted for, the last thing I wanted to see up on a 40-foot screen was some guy's penis. Why are today's younger men so willing to shell out their money for movies that feature what they can see for themselves in a mirror?

  • Are "Free oil tank removal" ads on Craigslist legit?

I have an old above ground oil tank in my basement, along with an old oil burner and oil hot water heater, and a washer/dryer. The oil tank is empty, except maybe for some sediment and/or sludge at the bottom.

I am converting to natural gas heat. I want to save as much money as I can. I saw a few ads on Craigslist (New York City-area) for guys saying they'd take all of this junk away for free.

Are these ads legit? Can these guys be trusted to remove the oil tank safely? Will they just cut up all the pipes that connect everything and leave me with major plumbing repairs? How do they prevent any possible leaks of sludge and/or sediment? Has anyone used one of these guys?

Any details on your own experience with these kinds of guys would be really appreciated and helpful. Thanks!

  • I'll be homeless for a week. How can I help my cat deal with that stress?

We're in the middle of a difficult house purchase, held up by our lousy mortgage bank's appraiser and her arrogance and ignorance. Because of this, we have to move on July 15th, but we won't close on the new place until July 21st. That's six days of staying with friends and family while our stuff sits in storage. This will be VERY hard on our cat, who is super outgoing and affectionate with us and super terrified of everyone else in the world. She's pushing eight years old, and we're really worried about all the stress our period of homelessness will cause her. Please, if anyone has any kind of similar experience to draw from, we'd love some advice on how to make the cat more comfortable during this really horrible period.

(Please keep in mind, this is not a typical situation. I read lots of info on how to acclimate a cat to a normal move and a new house. This situation isn't normal at all, and boarding her for a whole week isn't an option, financially.)

  • Can an appraiser kill a mortgage because of mold?

Our offer on the home was accepted, we got a commitment letter for the loan, and we had the apprasal done. The house appraised higher than the price we offered, so all looked good. We signed the contract. Then, the appraiser's report came in with a concern over mold in the bathroom. Now the mortgage is denied, unless the mold is remediated before closing (which is in 9 days!!!) The seller (a bank) won't do the repair, and since we don't own the house, yet, we can't do it, either. We need to close, and THEN we can remedy the mold problem, if it even really IS a problem (our home inspector didn't think it was serious enough that we couldn't live in the house while fixing the bathroom.)

Can the appraiser kill this deal over this? Will we lose our down payment? We put 10% down. We'll lose a LOT of money, plus we're supposed to vacate our apartment by June 30th. This appraiser will have us homeless and broke by July!

  • My pool was not winterized - Is it a goner?

My wife and I just bought a house (bank owned) with an in-ground vinyl pool. The bank (or the foreclosed upon previous owners, not sure which) decided the best thing to do was to drain the pool and do nothing else for the winter. Now the liner (only 5 years old, by the way) is detaching and I am wondering if the plumbing, filtration system, or any other major parts are shot. I was hoping for a fairly inexpensive relining process, but the more I research, the more I am worried that I might be better off filling the darn thing with dirt and joining the community pool. Any thoughts?

  • Why won't the "Obama is Muslim" myth die?

Obama is not Muslim, and with all of the Rev. Wright news of the past few weeks, I would think the myth that he is would be put to rest once and for all. But people STILL believe he's Muslim. I guess these must be the "uneducated" people who we see so firmly support Hillary Clinton.

  • How can Hillary justify counting the Florida and Michigan primaries?

Obama wasn't even on the ballot in Michigan, so wouldn't it be flat out wrong and unfair to count the Michigan primary and seat the delegates at the convention? Counting Florida kind of makes sense, but Michigan??? Seems like Hillary's just not into playing by the rules.

  • Where can I get an old-style phone ringer ringtone for a Verizon cell?

I tried to get one from the Samsung website (I have an SCH-u740), but it wouldn't download. So I tried searching the Verizon website for one. They don't have one. I am not into song ringtones; I like sound effects. My old cell had a cool antique phone ringer effect. I want that sound! (And I don't want to get all caught up in some scam site that sends me all sorts of B.S. texts after I download their tone. That would suck.)

  • How many people are buying into the Macbook Air hype?

This is a lousy computer by today's standards, and I am a total Mac loyalist. Sower CPU than the entry-level Macbook, small hard drive, no Ethernet, non-removable battery, and no optical drive? For $1700? How is this a good thing? And how do people burn their home movies to DVD without spending an additional $100 for an external SuperDrive? And what about ripping CDs? I am NOT about to get ALL of my music from iTunes! Seriously, isn't this computer more of a throwback than an advance?

  • What's the funniest misprint or error you've seen on a sign?

One time I was visiting my girlfriend at a resturant where she was a waitress. One of the other waitresses had put out a sign advertising the day's dinner special. She misspelled a key word, so a lot of guys eagerly ordered the "Vagina Ham" that day!

  • Why buy a cat or dog from a pet store?

I can't imagine why anyone would buy a cat or dog from a pet store when there are so many poor, abandoned, unwanted pets available from shelters for free. For anyone who did buy their cat or dog, why did you do it that way? Was it because you wanted a specific breed? Was it because you didn't realize you could get just as wonderful a pet for free (or for very little money)?

  • Can a vet please give me an opinion about treating head trauma in cats with steroids?

My 8-year old cat recently was whacked in the head with a heavy door. At first, she seemed fine, but within 24 hours she was showing signs of neurological problems (loss of balance, head tilt to the right, loss of appetite, etc.) The vet also found what seems to be an abscess at the root of her canine (?) tooth. She prescribed a steroid (prednisolone) to deal with the head injury and an antibiotic (clavamox) to deal with the infection. The cat is doing a little better, now. Still unbalanced, and still has the head tilt, but she's eating and interacting with us again. Also, her eyes have regained pupillary response and aren't "ticking" as much.

My question relates to the use of steroids to treat the head trauma. I just read an article that says it's not a good idea, and that people (and, presumably, pets) are more likely to die within two weeks of being injured than those not treated with steroids. Is this now widely believed? Are we making a potentially lethal mistake?

  • Where can I buy a new or used Mercury Watermouse?

These used to be the rental boats at Walt Disney World. I can't find any online for sale. I'd love to find one, especially with a trailer.

  • What's the big deal with smoking on TV or in movies?

I am not a smoker (used to be one, but I quit some time ago), but I am kind of annoyed about this movement to eliminate smoking from movies and TV shows. People smoke in real life, so who cares if they smoke in the media? Violence is acceptable, sex and gratuitous nudity is expected, alcohol consumption is fine, but smoking is a major taboo? Come on. Get real!

  • Do many women watch and enjoy porn on their own?

It seems to me that more men watch porn than women, and that most women find it disgusting. But is that a myth? Do women enjoy porn as much as men? Also, do women like to watch it alone, or would they rather watch it with their partners?
