A question for hog hunters.?
I've killed a couple of hogs over the years, but i don't consider myself a real hog hunter. My wife asked me a question about wild boar charges for use in a novel and I flat out don't know the answer.
When charging, does a wild boar charge with his head down or head up? I've never been charged, nor have I seen anyone else charged so I just don't know the answer. I hope you gentlemen can give me a bit of help.

2 AnswersHunting8 years agoQuestion about rattlesnakes?
A while back, a friend and I were talking about snakes.
I quoted the old adage: "Mr. Rattlesnake is a gentleman. He generally warns you before he strikes.
Lewis then mentioned a conversation with the owner of his deer lease in central Texas. The rancher said that he'd noticed that rattlesnakes seemed to rattle a lot less these days than formerly. He blamed this on the rising population of wild hogs, since the buzzing of a rattlesnake is a dinner bell for hogs.
Our hog population is not so heavy here in Lower Alabama so I've not noted a similar situation.
Do any of you hunters find similar behavioral changes in rattlesnakes in your area?
I probably won't pick a best answer to this one but will leave it to the voters.

11 AnswersHunting8 years agoA question for you Top Shot fans?
Did you see the episode in which the competitors used a flintlock "Kentucky Pistol" in the team competition.
When the so-called expert gave the competitors their training, he warned them not to tip the barrel down because the ball would roll out.
Put yourself in the place of the competitors. if you heard so-called expert give that warning, what would be the first question you'd ask?

8 AnswersHunting9 years agoHow does one report a deadbet to Credit Bureaus?
My Mom has a legal judgment against a person who is trying to hide from her and avoid payment.
If she can't collect the money owed, she wants to cause as much trouble as possible. So she wants to report them to a credit bureau.
How do we go about doing that?

2 AnswersPersonal Finance9 years agoSuggested Reading on the Ottoman Empire?
A friend asked my help in finding some books dealing with the Ottoman Empire. He is especially interested in the early days of the Empire and it's Age of Expansion rather than the long decline.
Since my reading on the Ottoman Empire has been largely limited to the time of the Crusades, the Fall of Constantinople and the repulse of the Turks at the Siege of Vienna, I thought I'd see if I could find any other Turkish History Buffs here.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If you are shooting the straight dope about actually being a soldier, thank you for serving our country and I apologize for some of my comments.
if you saw some of the asinine questions by video gamer idiots you'd understand why I get a bit testy about "sniper rifle" questions.
If you really want some good insight about rifles for military snipers, you should contact my good friend B.J. Snow at www.tipiknifeworks.com. Brother Bill spent the last decade or so of his military career building and maintaining rifles for the Army Marksmanship unit at Fort Benning, GA.
B.J. is also one helluva fine pistolsmith and a real artist at making custom knives. More than a few of his knives have seen service in Iraq and Afghanistan.
BTW, I'd not have taken this method of passing information if you would accept Private Messages or E-mails.

3 AnswersHunting10 years agoOK Gun Cranks, let's be honest?
What frightens you more?
The sight of someone with a gun in their hand?
The sight of a determined looking person approaching with a large knife in hand?
Or the sight of a hysterical person with a gun in hand?
Rank 'em, in order of most frightening to least frightening.

I’m starting a new project and need advise
My oldest friend has a 12-year old daughter. Jimmy’s
ex-wife can’t cook, and to be very kind, Jimmy’s cooking is of the rough and ready sort that his kids won’t et. So they end up eating take-out, fast food or pizzas daily. Not a good situation.
I offered to teach Jamie how to cook, and to quote her Dad, “She’s somewhere between thrilled and overjoyed.”
Now comes the hard part. I’ve never taught a kid to cook before. All my children have four feet, fur, and no thumbs. Their role in the kitchen is limited to grabbing food that falls on the floor. I don’t think Jamie’s culinary skills are much further advanced.
As a start, I’ve asked Jamie to make a list of things she wants to learn and her favorite foods. I thought that would be a starting point anyway. Currently we plan on two or three lessons per week.
It ha been many years since I learned to cook, and I was largely self-taught. I hope you good foodies will suggest some things I should teach her to cover the basics. I really don’t want to lead her into water over her head and turn her off on the whole project.
Will you please help me share our joy of cooking with this young lady? Please?

I've asked Jamie to make a list of things she wants to learn to do, and some of her favorite foods. I figured that would be a good starting point.
My goal is to try to teach at least one member of the family, under the age of 85, to become an adequate if not outstanding cook, and hopefully instill some of the joy of cooking. Another goal is to get the whole family into better eating habits.
I'd like you good foodies, to suggest some things I should teach her as basics so that I don't get her in over her head and turn her off altogether. It has been a long time since I learned to cook and was largely self-taught so I'm stepping off into uncharted territory here. Help me to keep this kid interested, please!
At present, plans are for two or three lessons per week.

5 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoWhy is it that people feel less....?
Why is it that people feel less threatened by lever-action rifles and revolvers, especially single-action revolvers, than by semi-automatic rifles and pistols?
Newell's question about use of paramilitary weapons made me think of this again.
Truth is many lever-action rifles fire cartridges that are much more powerful than so called "Assault Rifles, " or as I call them UBR's, and many revolvers, especially single-action revolvers, are chambered for cartridges far more powerful than the average semi-automatic pistol.
It makes no sense at all, but it seems to be true .
Any ideas why?

20 AnswersHunting1 decade agoIs it just me or do others hate electric stoves?
I'd rather cook over an open fire than on an electric stove!
The blasted things take forever to heat up, and take five times as to cool down when you turn it down or off.
I am heartily sick of overcooking things, or having my schedule throw out of whack by that damned slow heating electric stove!
So, does anyone else hate electric stoves as bad as I do?

It is bothersome enough that e-mail notification of "Best Answer" has been stopped, but removing the SpellCheck option really sucks.
Granted it was a PIA that the SpellCheck didn't recognize vast numbers of words, but it beats the heck out of having to proof read three times before posting.
And while I'm asking a question, what happened to "E-mail notification of new answers." Even thought the "e-mail notification" button was checked, I got no notification on the last two questions I posted.

8 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoA Sour Dough question?
I was recently given some sour dough starter with directions to feed it every five to ten days. It makes excellent bread and rolls.
My question is how often can I feed it?
I fed it on Thursday and made rolls, but now I'm almost out of bread.
Should I go ahead and feed it again and make bread or should I wait until Thursday to feed it again?

3 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoAre there any Missouri Lawmen here?
I just got an e-mail about a very disturbing report issued by Missouri Information Analysis Center which states that people displaying US Flags, Pro-American, Pro-Constitution, or Ron Paul bumper stickers are potential domestic terrorists and should be treated as such.
According to one of the articles linked to the e-mail, the report was sent out to Missouri Law Enforcement Officers and is being distributed nationwide.
Have any of you police officers seen any sort of official report along these lines or is it a major misunderstanding.
Doc Hudson
Quote from one article and link to another.
http://realneo.us/content/police-trained-nationwid...
A secret report distributed by the Missouri Information Analysis Center lists Ron Paul supporters, libertarians, people who display bumper stickers, people who own gold, or even people who fly a U.S. flag and equates them with radical race hate groups and terrorists. This is merely the latest example in an alarming trend which confirms that law enforcement across the country is being trained that American citizens are a dangerous enemy.
3 AnswersLaw Enforcement & Police1 decade agoA question about Boxty Potato Cakes?
I've searched for a good potato pancake recipe for nearly 30 years with little success. Finally, last week I was introduced to Boxty Potato Cakes here a YA.
I made some today and I think they are great.
My question is about how to serve Boxty.
Are they served along with sausages or bacon as a breakfast food?
Are they served as a side dish with lunch or dinner as a substitute for bread or other forms of potato?.
Are they served alone as a single dish meal?
If anyone wants to post their favorite potato pancake recipe, or their variation on Boxty, I won't get mad.

2 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoWhat do you think of folks who...?
Allow a half grown Boston Terrier pup to run loose during the day, then bring it in to sleep with their kid at night?
These same folks went on vacation for a week and left the dog roaming free.
I found the dog yesterday, and brought her home to keep her from becoming road pizza. I put out some posters this morning, and got a call this evening.
I gave the dog back, but I sure regret it.
What would you have done?
Next time I find her running loose, she is going to become MY DOG.

convince YA to open a forum just for Airsoft, Paintball, and airguns?
Like lots of other guncranks, I'm getting sort of tired of all the airsoft questions and airgun questions. Especially since so often the question is not clearly about toys.
I checked into the Hunting Forum a while ago and all the questions on page 1, except two, were about airsoft, paintball, and airguns.
I've accepted the fact that guns and shooting will not get a seperate forum, but I'd sure love to see the toys seperated from the real firearms and hunting questions.

20 AnswersHunting1 decade agoHere is a hypothetical question for the gun cranks and history buffs.?
Suspend disbelief and imagine the year is 1908.
You are in charge of what is ostensibly a major archeological expedition to study the Silk Road. To all appearances, the Smithsonian Institute, the British Museum, and the Royal Geographic Society jointly finance your expedition. In actuality, you have a second and more important mission from the British Military Intelligence Service/
Your mission is to travel the Silk Road from Shanghai, China all the way to the Mediterranean Coast at Antioch, Turkey. Along the way, you are to determine the military and political situation among the Central Asian tribal states, access Russian goals in the area, and sound out possible allies against a possible Russian move against India. The expedition will last at least three years and possibly as long as five years. A thorough survey of military potential outweighs any need for speed.
Since your expedition is going to travel through wild and lawless areas, it is to be expected that it will be heavily armed, any problems with Chinese, Russian, and Turkish authorities have been smoothed away diplomatically.
Your expedition staff will consist of some fifty trained archeologist, artists, botanists, zoologists, geographers, cartographers, geologists, and clerical staff. In addition to the academic members, there will be some 200 European and Americans (some of whom will actually be members of the British and American Armies on detached service) who will act as a military force to protect the expedition against warlords, bandits, and treachery from Russian, Chinese and Turkish agents. There will also be a few hundred coolies laborers, muleskinners, grooms, camel drivers, cooks, servants, guides, porters, translators, and guards.
Your task in this question is to explain how you plan to arm your expedition. Be specific, if you mean a Webley Irish Constabulary Revolver, say so, don’t just call it some ugly old British revolver. There are only three limitations. 1- the firearms and other weapons must be available in 1908, so no Magnum handguns or rifles, no modern assault rifles, and no M-1911 Colt Pistols. 2 - Military issue small arms should be avoided in order to provide deniability if there are spy charges made. 3 - The weapons must be light enough to be transported through some of the most rugged country in the world using only animal transport.
So fellow gun cranks, how will you equip your expedition?

8 AnswersHunting1 decade agoWhat is your idea of the perfect handgun battery?
Pick your ideal handgun battery, be specific, not just a .45 and a .22. Tell us what particular make, model, caliber, and barrel length you prefer.
This is not asking you to limit your collection. Let us assume that someone is going to give you a complete battery of handguns of your choice.
Here are the categories you should include in your list:
1 - Fun plinker handgun
2 - Small game hunting handgun
3 - Pocket/Concealment handgun
4 - Service sized belt gun
5 - Big Game hunting handgun
If you wish to include custom handguns, go ahead, give details of custom features. If you are opting for production handguns, try not to make them TOO esoteric, it preferable that they be either in current production, or readily available on the used gun market. If you wish to include blackpowder handguns, feel free.
Now, what is your idea of the perfect handgun battery? And tell us why you chose those particular handguns.
