Suggested Reading on the Ottoman Empire?
A friend asked my help in finding some books dealing with the Ottoman Empire. He is especially interested in the early days of the Empire and it's Age of Expansion rather than the long decline.
Since my reading on the Ottoman Empire has been largely limited to the time of the Crusades, the Fall of Constantinople and the repulse of the Turks at the Siege of Vienna, I thought I'd see if I could find any other Turkish History Buffs here.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The standard work is still 'History of the Ottoman Empire' by von Hammer, but it's 10 volumes, was written in the early 19th century and was criticized by many contemporaries for inaccuracies.
More recent works on specific events:
'The Great Siege:Malta 1565' - Ernle Bradford.
'The Siege of Vienna' - John Stoye [about the 1683 campaign and siege.]

'The Ottoman Empire 1326-1699' - Stephen Turnbull.
'The Ottoman Empire 1300-1650' - Colin Imber.

You should get "Ottoman Empire and Islamic Tradition" the book it great you don't know much about the Ottomans already. And the Book is mostly on the early history of the Ottoman Empire. But the book is rather short.

Mustafa Kemal tried his proper to decrease all the family members and background between Ottoman and the recent republic: He replaced the alphabet, dressing code, shape, all the administrative gadget etc. He even tried to eliminate the faith, yet he could no longer. it may be incorrect to state that new republic is a continuation of the empire. this is not any longer. Is a son a continuation of his father? Now, after a protracted time of prepare of this cultural revolution, new generations are as a rule decrease from their ancesters lifestyle and faith. poor them.
