  • Are there places that will clean AND deliver a couch from craigslist?

I've tried googling and searching craigslist but maybe I'm not using the right key words. The moving companies don't seem to do cleaning, and the cleaning companies don't seem to offer pickup/delivery. How can I find someone to do both?

I'm in LA, if that helps. And I'm not actually using craigslist - a friend who owns cats is selling me her couch and I'd prefer to have it rid of cat hair before it enters my home. I just figured craigslist is a common situation for this kind of need.

  • Do clothes exposed to salt water need any special laundry treatment?

I wore jeans to go kayaking and they got soaked in salt water. Can I wash them with other clothes or do they need to be separated? Do they need any other kind of special treatment, other than regular detergent?

  • How did my sink get clogged while I was out of town?

My sink was doing fine. I went out of town for 2.5 weeks and no one used the sink. When I came back, it was clogged. How did this happen and how do I fix it??

FYI: It's the bathroom sink. It runs fine at first then gets stopped up after a few seconds.

  • Is the engineering industry surviving in California?

In a stable economy, California has a fantastic engineering stronghold. Are jobs still available in that industry, even now? Or are they suffering massive layoffs and struggling under the budget crisis?

I'm asking because I know someone who will be looking for an electrical engineering job in the LA area in a year. He has 2 years experience and he'll be looking for jobs in the winter, hoping to be hired by next August. With the California economy how it is, does he have a chance?

  • How do I become a legal "resident" of my new state (CA)?

I'm moving from TX to CA in August for grad school. I was born in TX, so I am a legal resident there. How do I become a legal resident of CA?

What all would be involved exactly and how would I start? (i.e. car plates, drivers license, car insurance, in-state tuition, voter registration, etc.)

Or should I even try? I hear the car fees might be rough, but if I'm paying state income taxes, I'd like to vote on who is receiving them.

  • Car salesman used fraudulent information on a credit app. Who do I report to?

My bf and I went to a dealership to look at used cars and before we knew it, the salesman had him filling out a credit application. My bf told me later that he saw the guy add $400 to his monthly salary and a year to his employment term at his last job. I don't know what this salesman thinks is going on in this country, but crap like that needs to stop.

Am I overreacting? How can I report this guy? I don't want to just call his supervisor, because he's probably in on it, too.

FYI: we were given his credit score, told he'd need a co-signer because he had no "auto credit" history, and left them with a fake number and no sale.

  • Xbox crashed while saving. Is my game lost forever?

I was playing Fable II on my friend's 360, which crashes alot (starts skipping then says that the disc is unreadable - it's not the disc, it's the xbox). I was saving my game when it did this again, but it froze on the screen asking me to confirm that I wanted to save.

Now when I try to play my saved game, it goes to the "loading Oakville" screen with music for about 2 seconds then goes black and silent. I cannot do anything else without restarting the xbox. I have tried at least 5 times and same thing happens every time.

I have tried transferring my save game from the hard drive to a memory card - no change.

I have tried loading other user's games and staring a new game - worked fine.

I would like to try putting it on the memory card and loading it from another xbox, but I don't have access to another xbox anytime soon.

Is there anything I can do to recover my game??

  • Is there somewhere online that I can find an agnostic psychiatrist?

I've found resources for people looking specifically for Christian psychiatrists.

Are there online resources for non-theists or agnostics looking to find a local psychiatrist that shares their beliefs?

  • Are rainbow's arcs always the same angle?

Does the curvature of the arc of a rainbow change depending on the time of day (position of the sun)? Size of the raindrops? Observer's position?

Or do the conditions that require a rainbow to exist restrict its curvature's range?

  • What's the worst tattoo you've ever seen?

Preference for stories about friends of yours or personal encounters, not just pictures you've seen on the net.

You can tell a story of the best tattoo also if you want.

  • Why are the people allowed to vote on something that was already ruled unconstitutional?

    NO OPINIONS PLEASE!!

This is an academic political science question. Polisci was never my strength. I know almost everyone has an opinion about the California gay marriage issue, but stating it will make me wonder how spurious the rest of your answer is.

    Checks and balances:

The people voted on it (legislative branch), then the courts overruled the vote and claimed it was unconstitutional (judicial branch). The executive branch, Schwarzenegger, agreed not to contest the court's decision.

I thought that if something is unconstitutional, it's no longer up to the people to decide whether or not it should be illegal. So why is it going back to the people's vote in November if it was already ruled unconstitutional??

Does the new ballot proposal need a separate ruling from the courts? If so, won't it just be struck down again if it's passed?

  • Are two bachelor's degrees better than one?

What would employers think about a person who went back to get a second bachelor's degree (in a related field) before joining the work force?

I know that a person with 2 bachelor's degrees will not be favored next to someone with a master's. But what about next to a person with only one bachelor's?

I've heard conflicting advice. Some are concerned that employers would think you wasted your time and should have joined the workforce sooner.

  • Is birth beautiful or disgusting?

Birth is often whimsically described as "beautiful", usually in the philosophical context of creating new life. It's often referred to as a miracle (i.e. "the miracle of birth").

But in reality, the process of birth is considered by many to be just gross. Although the organs involved are technically fulfilling their natural purpose, they are being stretched to (and often break) their own limitations. I'm not even going to mention the body fluids involved by name.

It seems strange that the same event could have such contrasting common descriptions.

In your opinion, which description ("beautiful" or "disgusting") is more appropriate?

Is the perspective that chooses beauty ignorant to the realities of what happens in the delivery room? Is the perspective that chooses disgust too crass to appreciate what is happening during birth on a deeper level?

It'd be helpful to state whether or not you have ever witnessed/experienced birth with your answer.

  • How can I teach my little sister (12 yrs old) not to be shallow/mean? Please be as specific as possible.?

My half sister and I get along well, she respects me alot. I'm in college, so I don't get to spend much time with her. Lately I'm really disappointed with her attitude. She's turning into one of the stereotypical "popular girls," willfully ignorant and valuing looks over all else.

Example: I watched an episode of America's Next Top Model with her where a girl gets criticized for gaining weight. I told her I didn't like that and she said "but she ate, like, 3 croissants!" Then at dinner that night she said she shouldn't be eating so much!

She had "nerd" and "gay" written across the pictures of some boys in her year book and tried to defend it by saying, "nobody likes them, they're weird."

I can handle it if she doesn't want to be nerdy like me, but I'm worried about her being mean or intolerant. I wish she understood social issues like I do; I can't really count on her conservative parents to keep an eye out for that kind of thing.

What should I do?? How can I be a better influence?

  • PhD Students: What was your GRE score and how did it affect your admissions experience?

I applied to PhD programs last year and got a 550V (73rd percentile) 690Q (70th percentile) and 4.0W (54th percentile) on the GRE. I was rejected by 2 schools, accepted by 1 (with no funding), and wait listed then later rejected by my dream school.

I'm staring a new round of applications and trying to figure out if I need to retake the GRE. I *really* don't want to, but I don't want to limit myself if those aren't good enough scores. I especially want to get into a school with funding.

I'm planning on calling the dream school that waitlisted me last year to ask if my GRE score was good enough or a factor. Since they're the only school I'm reapplying to, retaking it would show that I've made effort to improve. But I'm also taking doctoral-level quantitative analysis classes this year for the same purpose.

My prof's think that my Verbal score needs to be at least 600 but I don't know. How much do you think a 1240 GRE score will limit my options?

My field is Sociology, by the way.

  • Divorcees: what should couples look for to predict whether or not their marriage will end in divorce?

Were there any clues before you married that it would be a mistake?

Was there something you wish you had known or asked before you got married to your now ex-spouse?

*For happily remarried people: what was different about your relationship before you married this time?*

Please try to keep the bitterness to a minimum. Although I'm not considering marriage at the moment, I'm interest in what genuine advise you have for couples considering marriage that will help them avoid a mistake or divorce.

I also understand that sometimes people change *after* marriage and there aren't going to be clues every time. But what was your experience?

An example of what I'm looking for:

"Before we married I should have known we would end up divorced because...." (I didn't get excited every time I saw him anymore.) (I knew I didn't want kids but she did.) (We didn't live together first.) (We don't have the same financial habits.) Anything.

  • What has changed with Afghanistan since the year 2000? What is it like there now?

I just watched The Kite Runner, and it ends with Afghanistan in horrible condition in the year 2000. The Taliban is controlling everything, from religion (obviously) to recreation.

I'm pretty sure the US didn't get involved with Afghanistan until 2001 or so. Are things better now? What is it like there?
